Keep in mind that A), this card is scheduled to be released in 1-2 months, and B), it's gunna cost $400.

Also note that ATI is about to launch their next generation stuff as well.

as much as I love ati, I have to say they are scared. They just pulled out all the stops with there new card supposedly opening up some hidden pipelines and some other things to compete with this card. I'm pressed though seriously nvidias heatsinks are getting outragious :p

You're going to buy that card for me? Wow! Thanks!

You forgot to add the info about the required 480 Watt PSU.... =)

DiscoDave

It doesn't really use up anymore power than a 9800 XT. If you've got a decent power supply, you shouldn't need to replace it.

SuperDude
04-14-2004, 03:45 PM
i read on some other forum that a 480 was required.... ill do a lil more research

AH HA HA, I FOUND IT

While we're on the topic of massive - the power requirements of the GF 6800 Ultra are just that as well. The card sports two auxiliary power connectors. NVIDIA prescribes that each of them receive a four-pin molex connector from an ATX power cable that is not connected to other devices, with the exception of fans. In English - each of the ports requires a dedicated ATX power cable, and both need to be connected! This may pose a problem for many users, since even many of the more powerful power supplies often only feature a total of three ATX power cables. That would leave one cable for all of the remaining devices in the system, e.g. hard drives, optical drives and the like.

Ok dave you can now :kneel:

To satisfy the 222 million transistor behemoth's hunger for power, NVIDIA strongly suggests the use of a power supply with a minimum capacity of 480 Watts. According to NVIDIA's numbers, the 6800 Ultra draws about 110 Watts, 2/3 of which are used by the GPU. That makes its power draw about 25% higher than that of the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra.

It uses a little more than the 9800XT during games, but it's not freakish and I stand by my claim that a well made 300+ watt power supply will be sufficient.

What's with the dual DVI output?

All the new cards are doing that. A DVI to VGA converter comes with each card however, so your non DVI monitors will still work with the cards.

Although I'm personally a fan of ATI, I'd take anything they say at this point with a grain of salt. Actually, I'd take the grain of salt as having more significance.

You might be saying to yourself..."wait a minute...ATI will release some of their new stuff within a month...why would they lie when they're so close to having their hardware reviewed?"

The answer? I haven't the foggiest idea...but both ATI and Nvidia have histories of being stupidly dishonest.

I have a feeling ATI's not going to be able to give a clear preformance gain, what I expect to see is the tables to switch as nVidia works on quality and ATI tries to push up speeds to match the 6800. Saying that I see ATI's current cards lowering in price and becoming the mainstreem and eating away at nVidias current lower end stoof where all the profits lay!

This card will probly not go over well with shuttle owners. Looks like it will take up the agp port, and the only PCI slot they have.

the heat sink doesn't suprise me much at all. They've tried worse before with the 5800 ultra (if you wan't to see what I mean just look in my case). this is an improvement on the leaf blower design, if not much of one.
As for the rest, Dave get your self a deacent power supply. nothing except a shuttle should be running on less than a 400w ps these days. also if you need dedicated lines for you're video card talk to pc power and cooling. they will add custom ends and extra lines to you're power supply. I don't know what they charge but I do reccomend them for power supplys above most others.

I may have been wrong abot the shuttle. Maybe Dave can correct me but now I think that the PCI slot is in the back of the card on a shuttle. That way you can show off your card if you have a window. But I still don't know if there would be clearance between it and the side of the case.

I think I'm running on a 350 watt power supply. Maybe it's a 365? I bet Ender knows, we have the same one.

2600+, 9800 Pro, no problems.

Verbal
04-20-2004, 07:19 PM
No Thanatos, a 350 should be just fine for quite a while. You are never going to use all 350 watts, even with one of those 6800 cards, it would do just fine. Unless, of course, it is a low end PSU, in which case the distribution is often very off balance and it CAN use most of your wattage.

The new ATI is going to blow the new nVidia out of the water

thats not what i heard, you got a source?

rumer has it that ATI's architechture is not as expandable/upgradeable as NVidia's, so sooner or later ATI is going to have to go back to the drawing board.
