I am not a Sony fanboy. I have never owned one of their consoles, I think that they sell some of the most software-bloated laptops around, and what they do with DRM technology is despicable. Nevertheless, I am beginning to open to the posibility that the PS3 represents a new direction for Sony.

Three main things lead me to think this. First, Sony has taken the novel step of allowing people to upgrade the PS3's harddrive themselves without voiding the warranty. http://ps3.qj.net/Like-the-manual-said-PS3-HDD-replaced/pg/49/aid/72455

Second, the PS3, unlike the 360, has no multimedia restrictions. This means you can enjoy watching your videos in beautiful 1080p! http://ps3.qj.net/PS3-unlimited-video-playback-no-multimedia-restrictions-/pg/49/aid/72544

Finally, and this is the most important point for me, you can install other OSs! The literature seems to indicate that any OS with a PPC build should run fine on the PS3 - which will include all my favorite linux builds. With this, the PS3 isn't a console in my mind anymore, it's a computer. In fact, it's a $500 computer with a decent processor, a huge graphics potential, and a blu-ray disc player. That is a pretty sweet deal in my mind. http://www.qj.net/How-to-install-another-OS-on-your-PS3-/pg/49/aid/72538

Of course, we will have to wait and see if this all pans out to be true in the long run, or if instead, Sony decides to cripple this functionality with another firmware update or what not. On the other hand, if all this really is true, I might just be getting myself a PS3.

I can't imagine that Sony would let you enjoy free use of all the potential of PS3, they are a big movie studio and are constantly worrying about how pirates are going to try to use anything to dig into their profits.

They will probably lock down a lot of the high res features with some form of broken copy protection that punishes legitimate rule-abiding users.

Good point thought about the loading OSs. That is a hell of a good deal for a multi-core processor, and blu-ray drive just by themselves, let alone in a functioning computer.
