Ok, I am about to breathe life into my RAID dreams with my 2 200gb Seagate Cuda's (8 mb cache, 7200rpm) HDD's and my promise RAID card.

I am wondering some thing. I am a fan of partitioned hard drives (call me crazy but I notice a difference in recall times and st00f). I plan on using RAID 0 so in effect I will have a 400 gb hard drive. How do I set up the partitions? Will windows know right away that I have raid 0 and treat it like a 400 gb drive...considering also that I have to reinstall winxp on this shindig? I am curious to know and I am about to delve into my box and mess things up. :rup:

Let me know if you know or have the slightest clue what I am talking about. :)

this is going to be a hardware raid solution so windows will see the 2 drives as a single volume. if you want partitions you might be able to setup multiple arrays useing the two drives but I don't know for sure. also you might just be better off useing seporate physical disks instead of partitions(take an old drive or two to use for your other partitions) just remember these drives will not have the advantages that your array has.

there is nothing wrong with partitioning a raid array, i do it all the time. when installing windows xp onto the raid array, at the beginning of setup, when it says press f6 to instlal third party drivers, DO IT. later, it will ask you to specify additional drivers, at this point, you can provide the raid drivers on a floppy, once you've done that, windows will recognise your entire array as one dirve, and you can format/partition it just like a regular drive.
