Due to high demand for gigabit ports, and helped by generous donations made by people happy to see a free lan, I have officially ordered not 1 Gigabit switch, not 2 gigabit switches, not even 3 gigabit switches, but 4 gigabit switches, each with 8 ports.

In time for BLE January, I'll be purchasing 2 more which will make our entire network gigabit. For the time being, however, there will still be a few 100 megabit switches available. These will be marked, and if you have a 100 megabit card, please, please, please use those ports saving gigabit ports for people with gigabit cards.

Also, as another reminder, BLE will be meeting up to watch Doom in Bellingham on Saturday Afternoon, to be followed up with some lunch/Dinner at a restaurant to be determined.

Details when showtimes are announced. In the mean time, feel free to discuss what general time frame would be best. Right now I'm thinking a 4:00-5:00ish showing.

so does this mean that almost everyone will have gigabyte at the LAN?

It's my hope that everyone with gigabit nic's will have access to a gigabit switch. I can't guarentee that, though.

I haven't planned out how the new network will work (it's a bit trickier without our big 24 port serving as the backbone), but on paper we should (if my math is right) have 23 gigabit ports. Not all of those ports may be readily available due to proximity limitations taking account for the fact that one of the switches will be used as the backbone to connect other switches, and after uplink each switch will have 7 ports remaining for users.

I'll do the best I can to make sure that any wasted ports are wasted on the 100 megabit switches, of course. I'll probably be drawing up the new room layout this weekend, so I should be able to give a more concrete answer then.

I call one. LOL. But does that mean that we are gonna have the same kind of problems like when we first started? When we where using all the seprate switches.

DiscoDave

No. At least, I hope not.

The topology of the network won't change. I'm going to have one switch serve as the backbone for the network feeding each of the other switches. This will work without having to daisy chain as long as we never get more than 48 people (7 * 7).

That said, there is method to my madness in terms of making this a free lan. There's enough changing behind the scenes that it's entirely possible there will be technical difficulties.

The goal of this LAN is to make sure that if there are any other remaining unforseen problems (ala last month's Internet Access), they're all dealt with at this event in a minimal risk environment...ie, I don't feel guilty if something bjorks at a free lan.

Obviously I'm doing everything in my power to give all the new blood an extremely positive experience, but only a fool makes serious changes to the network infrastructure, tests the limits of a new location by filling it to max capacity, and tries out an entirely new Internet access format without expecting a few niggles.

Need any help settin up? I can move tables.

DiscoDave

Actually, yea, I could use one or two people to help setup. You don't have to move tables (Hotel does that) but I could use a hand with power and networking distribution.
