My computer is FUBAR'ed. When i try to shut down all goes fine till after it says "saving your settings" it says your computer is now shutting down... my mouse freezes and the pc stops responding. for awhile it would only take 5 mins to turn off now its indefinate.
Not spyware - i checked
Not a virus - i checked
Not norton freezing the comp - i tried without norton turned on
i have latest winxp updates
I have turned off all services, still no juice, turned them all on, no juice, default no juice
Msconfig - all non essential stuff is turned off
Prolly more i have done but its so simple i cant remember it
The kicker is that if i restart my pc and then select shutdown within a few mins it will turn off just fine,(in about 10-15 secs)
This is the only complaint about my uber-kool-kick-ass computer do you guys have any ideas what is wrong?

well, until you said that it shuts down fine if it's only been running 5 minutes, I would have said you've got some screwed up files and to just do a system restore.
But from what you've said about it shutting down fine if it's only run 5 minutes leads me to believe it's a heating issue. That's really the only difference between 5 minutes and several hours, is the temperature of the components. At least this is where the problem would lie if we were talking about cars.

This is a pretty common problem in Windows98, but I haven't seen it in Windows XP.
I'm pretty skeptical that it's a heat issue, just because I don't think shutting down is a particularly system intensive task...at least, not when compared to playing a game which is where heating issues usually crop up.
It wouldn't hurt to test the theory, though, and you can do that by leaning the computer on it's side and taking off the case (allowing the heat to rise).
About the only thing I can suggest would be to manually shut down all programs (including all processes via ctrl-alt-del) so you've just got the bare minimum (taskmgr, Explorer...) running. You should be able to get rid of everything save 3-4 items. If you CAN'T, then that's probably what's causing the problem. If the system can't unload a program out of the memory, it's never going to shut down and can cause the problem you describe.

Try these. Look at the symptoms section of each to see if it applies.

If I was getting paid by someone to fix their computer i would go farther. But if it was my own machine I would definately format and start fresh. But thats just me. ;)

I can only see two options here. reinstall or live with it. I only reccoment living with it if youu don't get a disk scan every time you start up. I've lived with a hang on shutdown for months before another problem made me reinstall and I naver had a problem. good luck with what ever you choose to do
