I've heard estimates of 299-500 dollars being thrown about the interweb :(
They're going to be taking HUGE loses on all of this though...
3x 3.2ghz PowerPC processors = $$$
X800 512mb Custom = $$$ (X800 XL 2/ 512MB ram = 450 dollars, all by itself)

have i mentioned lately how much i love microsoft? (wow that feels wrong, even my apple thinks its wrong) http://www.danielgt.com/images/microsoft.jpg
I can't wait for people to open these things up and find out more about the cpu's and mobo's. Its hardware is really to good to be true! Is the cache really small, what is it based off of, G4, G5 or what?? Why haven't we seen these in Apples if they are so good? This is killing me

found the specs i was looking for. The Xbox CPU
• Three symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each
• Two hardware threads per core; six hardware threads total
• VMX-128 vector unit per core; three total
• 128 VMX-128 registers per hardware thread
• 1 MB L2 cache
The Apple G5
• Single 1.8GHz, dual 2.0GHz, dual 2.3GHz or dual 2.7GHz 64-bit PowerPC G5 microprocessors
• PowerPC processor architecture with 64-bit data paths and registers
• 512K on-chip L2 cache running at processor speed
• Parallel data structure supporting up to 215 simultaneous in-flight instructions
• Simultaneous issue of up to 10 out-of-order operations
• Dual-pipeline Velocity Engine for 128-bit single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) processing
• Two independent double-precision floating-point units
• Advanced three-stage branch-prediction logic
• One 600MHz or two 1GHz, 1.15GHz or 1.35GHz 64-bit DDR frontside busses supporting up to 21.6 GBps data throughput
• Point-to-point system controller
what this means, is the Xbox has more cache, altevec, and is faster then the G5. I cry

Nice video. I really like what they are saying about this system. And I like what their aiming for. I love how much they are focusing on the multiplayer aspect with imprvements to Live. And some of the multimedia things look good too. I don't play consoles much. But I will most likely buy this when it comes out because I am a sucker for a new system. If it comes out in November I'll buy 2 or more and sell some on e-Bay.

I DON"T KNOW WHY YOU FOCKERS ARE SO BIG ON THE PROCESSOR.
I'm saying this one last f'n time before you all are fired:
x386 achitecture != Windows 3.1/9*/2000/xp
PowerPC (ie, g4/g5) Architecture != Mac OS *
!= <-- THAT MEANS DOES NOT EQUAL
you all are f***ing morons

I still don't see anyhting saying it's a verision of a G5. Maybe they just found it ironic to put the develpoment in the G5 case provided the pics aren't faked.

Yeah, but can you run a x86 chip with OS 10? ;)

Its the same type of processor, that's where all the references come from.
Refer to this analogy:
I have an AMD 2400 Barton processor.
Farvneho has an AMD 64 3000+ Processor.
They're both made by AMD, and his is faster.

i can guarantee those pics are NOT fake. I saw three of those myself, including the inside of one of them. "Xenon" dev kits are indeed G5 cases. dual core and all.

The G5 is a very capable processor, clock per clock it is very efficient but thats not the big question for me. I'm curious why they did it. I was just talking with hockeystickpro and i came to me perhaps its because of the G5s ability to run so well in a multiprocessor setting. You can see this in Virginia Techs Terascale super computer (http://www.tcf.vt.edu/). While it is a slower super computer it is at 7th now I think? That sorta makes sense i think.
anyway a strange move for ms, but makes sense from that view

The reason they did it is that ibm is developing the processor for the x-box...plain and simple. and don't they make the proc for the G5 also?
(yes. they do)
think about it. why would they design a whole new box for the dev kits, when they have an off the shelf one handy? besides anyone notice the similarity of the new x-box to apple's products? they look like marshmallows.

umm... itsmeee was talking about using the PPC with altivec as the cpu power for the new xbox, not the G5 as a dev kit. plus, i dont think MS just grabbed G5s, im pretty sure theyre heavily modified.

thats what i meant...it makes sense to grab an off the shelf case and the best cheapest solution for both the dual chip capeability coupled with the fact that ibm already designs the G5 chips, so you know they will be compatable to a point I mean you'd have to agree tho the G5 case makes sense it is well designed for cooling and performance, and ibm can design chips easily to fit in it...I thought it was just a given that the kits would be heavily modded.
The comment about the asthetics I made was just a side note...it diddnt have anything to do with the rest of it. my apologies for lumping them together.

ah. well, AFAIK, you cant "just grab" a G5 case. i think you need to actually buy the system to get the case.

And a hell of a lot cheaper... hmmm... just like PCs!
(I'm asking somebody who would know about the G5s. I don't think I'll be able to post the info, though, because I'm fairly certain his NDA would be violated by telling anybody.)

"We purchased a number of Apple G5's because very specific hardware components of the G5 allow developers to emulate some of the technology behind future Xbox products and services," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "This is an interim development tool that will be replaced with a more powerful and comprehensive solution later."
The new console from Microsoft is based on a similar IBM PowerPC architecture used in Apple computers--the Xbox 360 uses three 3.2GHz symmetrical cores, according to the company. Apple has been using PowerPC chips since 1994 and Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs has said the company is happy with IBM's PowerPC family of chips.
