View Full Version : Newly Enabled Feature: Reputation

Beside everyone's post, under their name, there's a new icon that'll show up of a scale. There's also a little green dot. These are the two new parts of Reputation, which is something VB has always offered but I've left disabled.

I've now enabled it. If you see a post you like, or a post you don't like, click on the scale to supply reputation. You can give a reason, or you don't have to.

The intent here is to give some means of measurement to what people think about you in cases where they wouldn't necessarily go to the trouble of making a post. If you're a constant asshole, for example, your reputation should reflect as such.

There are no punishments or rewards for having a high reputation, but BLE reserves the right to decide on some at a later date.

Feedback is welcome.

Are the points you give anonymous? or will flame wars break out because someone can tell who gave them negitive points?

If I think Dave is a homo satanic devil because he wants butsecks with Deezee and I rate him negitive. Will Dave know it was me?

DiscoDave

Good question. I think it's anonymous, but I could be wrong. I just sent you some feedback. Anything different?

DiscoDave
04-18-2005, 05:33 PM
Looks anonymous. If you click on your own scale, you can see the comments left by others, but it doesn't say who left what.

In other words don't diss the admins and expect to get away with it.

FeaR will have a low rep because everyone hates him.

Dave can you see who commented on you?

DiscoDave
04-18-2005, 06:54 PM
Dave can you see who commented on you?
Yes. Well, I could but not anymore...but still kinda.

For the sake of privacy, I've disabled Admin ability to see comments. But understand that it's not REALLY private because I could just as easily re-enable it.

I encourage all feedback, though...good feedback is fine and a moral booster, but good feedback never makes the world a better place...only negative feedback holds that potential. There is little in this world I take personally.

There is a reason why I haven't enabled this a long time ago...I'm not head over heels with the idea myself, there are also reasons why we're trying it now.

Whether or not it sticks around will be up to you guys.

If this idea takes off, I'm toying with the idea of a "special" forum available only to people with a high rating. This forum would be focused on discussing things that, for whatever reason, wouldn't be accessable to those who are found to be a bit more critical and/or aggressive than they should be.

Just an idea I'm mulling over.

I think what he's implying is, it's fun to engage in friendly bout of smack talking or one-upsmanship with FeaR because he likes to dish it out but he can take it too.

I think forum reputation meters are unutterably silly, but whatever. :p

Depends. The longer you've been around, the more posts you have, the higher your own reputation, the more points you're worth. Between 1 and 10.

Bad Idea here's why:

1.The title "reputation" is a misnomer, reputation doesn't mean "truth" it only means popular belief, which is not the same.

2. It could be abused into the ground therefore devoiding any accuracy in reporting.

3. If you seperate "good people" from the "bad people" by creating areas only for those with "good enough" reputations, you are creating a class system. I for one might feel like a tier 2 member/friend of this organization...basically like if members are only allowed to participate in order to fill a seat, if participants are made to feel this way they might be inclined to not participate. (I for one appreciate that not ALL of the spoils of the lans go to only the best players)

4. Sheer volume of posts can alter how you are precieved (see reason one, which we will call the "Fear" factor :)...)

5. Just because you can post more than anyone, means you'll be rewarded for it? So let me get this straight...if you have "LESS" of a life, and therefore you post more as a result...you get more points automatically?
We'll call this the "counter-strike" factor...

These are only a few points, I'm sure there are more, but I hope this is what you meant by "Feedback Welcome"

1.The title "reputation" is a misnomer, reputation doesn't mean "truth" it only means popular belief, which is not the same.
Who said anything about it meaning "truth"?

2. It could be abused into the ground therefore devoiding any accuracy in reporting.
Very true.

3. If you seperate "good people" from the "bad people" by creating areas only for those with "good enough" reputations, you are creating a class system.
Also very true. But there are a lot of topics I very much enjoy having on online forums, yet it seems very clear that this forum isn't suited to such serious topics, so I talk about them on other forums...but it still makes me sad. :(

4. Sheer volume of posts can alter how you are precieved (see reason one, which we will call the "Fear" factor :)...)
This is true as long as postcount is enabled.

5. Just because you can post more than anyone, means you'll be rewarded for it? So let me get this straight...if you have "LESS" of a life, and therefore you post more as a result...you get more points automatically?
Well, you don't get more reputation points, but your voting has more weight. Maybe that's what you mean. That's not the only factor, but it is a factor.

These are only a few points, I'm sure there are more, but I hope this is what you meant by "Feedback Welcome"
Definitely, and I do appreciate you taking the time. I agree with you on a lot of points, as do I agree with Pine. Just the same, this is a test...I'm gunna leave it enabled for about a month and then try and get a sense for whether or not it's being used for good, evil, or if it's entirely useless. I'll definitely be curious to see your thoughts at that time.
