View Full Version : Sponsors/Prizes

Yesterday I swung by CoolerGuys, one of the better sponsors we have in terms of prizes they give us ( www.coolerguys.com ), and while I was there he kinda perused our website noticing a lack of advertising. The reason they give us stuff we can give away is they hope to generate business from the experience...and indeed, we'd certainly like sponsoring us to be a mutually beneficial experience from both perspectives. We do have a "sponsors" page that we'll probably put up sometime between now and 2085, but even that is pretty subtle and not really the type of stuff advertisors look for.
This puts us in a bit of a conundrum, because while we don't really like "selling out", so to speak...we do happen to like giving away prizes.
Basically, I just want to open the floor to you guys, so we can get a feel for how you feel about this subject. Would you be okay with a dozen flashing popup ads everytime you click on a forum subject, or would you be okay with having a month's worth of my toe-lint as a grand prize? Or are you somewhere in the middle?

I voted option 3 (the i don't mind keep ing the sponsors happy) but I want to be clear that while more adds are ok (maby a rotating banner ad at the top of the site and in the forums and a few more in the sidebar on the main page) I do not like popups! so my vote is such: more advertiseing is ok as long as it doesn't get out of control.
--edit--
err make that number 4 I voted for

That's option 4.... I voted for 3, but for the same reasons as Thanatos. I don't like popups. I hate them. As long as the ads are unobtrusive... I've got no problems!

I don't really mind either way though I don't get popups and I didn't get ads till I finnaly turned them on cause I felt left out when I'd go to a web page and it would have big blank spots in it :(

Yes, so do I. But I hate to need to use it on the site I spend the most time on. ;)

Well, popups suxx0r, screw them.
Like Thantos said, a rotating ad bar would be cool, kinda like, your news ticker on the bottom on King5 when they switch over to Today in the mornings.
Ads on the side, like the banners on the side of the frontpage would be bad at all. Plus, I always put the sponsors on my flyers too.
As long as it doesnt get out of control, Im cool with it.
No popups please. I don't mind banners however, as long as they don't take up half the screen.

We won't do any popups...I was just using an extreme example in order to keep myself amused.
We'd also never give away my collection of toe lint. (It's far too precious)

Seeing as how I can selectively block anything I don't want to see on the webpage (and have the blank space it leaves behind removed) and have all popups blocked, I'm all for whatever. ;)
In all seriousness, I'm pretty blind to web ads anymore, but if it makes the sponsors happy I don't see how adding a few non-obnoxious could be a bad thing.
More free stuff offsets more ads, easily.
