Agreed, steam sucks, and the general thought of it I think is a horrible idea. :)

to clarify I think the idea of having a way to track all the different HL mods was a good idea....what they did with HL2 was incredibly stupid and the person that came up with the idea....should be beaten with his own keyboard...or if a management person....then strangled with his own tie...

It's a good idea to keep track of the all the mods, but a tab in the menu system or something could do it just as well. And as far as automatic updates, that can be taken care of in game when you connect to the multiplayer menu, and it automatically checks then and downloads the update necessary - like HALO PC does.
There is pretty much not a single good reason to have a 2nd program installed on the computer to handle this stuff...and especially the whole validation thing for the single player. That was really dumb. But the one good thing about it all (for them anyway, not us) is not they have an uneeded program on our computers, and have proved it's not that hard to do...so welcome the new onslaught of such programs sure to come, in just as many legimate ways. :)

Uh huh, I thought it was REALLY FUCKING DUMB because I couldn't play the game for nearly 7 hours because the steam servers were swamped with everybody trying to validate the game. I thought that Valve would have learned from the past and found a way to prevent such a mishap from happening. the HL2 release proved me wrong.
