View Full Version : Friday Night LANs??

As it stands now we start our LANs at 10:00 am on a Saturday morning and go until whenever, with the last LAN ending around 5:30 a.m. Cleanup lasted another 3 hours. Our LANs our setup on the Friday night before starting around 7:00 pm and going until 10:00 or so 'testing' the network to make sure it runs ok. ;)

It is beginning to be apparent that the LANs are likely to last longer and longer so long as the peoples stick around and want to play games. There were about 10 of us that bled until 5:30 last month. :) The more people that come who are able and willing to stay later, the longer people are likely to stay and hence the later the LANs are going to run. :bulb: (wacked out crazy English language!)

This doesn't mesh well with some people however as they have Sunday activities that start early in the morning that they need ample rest for. Ender is one of these folk and he runs the LANs! Disque-O, however, has no such engagements planned so he is able to stay longer. bwauhaha and now you're all wondering who is writing this!!! ;)

Ender would like to start the LANs Friday night at or around 7:00 - barring of course permission from our hosts, the 412i company, and their willingness - and finish the LANs by midnight Saturday.

This poses some problems though, as most of us either go to work or school on Fridays all day. Doing that, then LAN-ing for the night will have all of us spent by Saturday morning. But for some of the diehards we could go all night and the next day too, on a couple hours of sleep.

Basicaly it comes down to this. Should we start the LANs on Friday night and finish them on Saturdays instead of Starting them Saturdays and finishing them Sunday mornings?

Extending the time like this would allow for the most gaming and for people who have time restraints to get more gaming for their buck because there would be more time in which to do it. The risk however is that not everybody will be there at the same time and so some people will miss most of the LAN. But since we all pretty much live here, we could start Friday night and play for a while, go home and sleep for a bit, come back Saturday morning to all our computers already set up and ready to go and pick up where we left off, getting our fill Saturday night in time for all the peoples who need to get a good nights sleep to go home and get it.

There's a possibility too that if there were still more hardcore folks that yon Dave could stick around (cause he's most definitely going to be getting his beauty sleep Friday night). Not for sure but possibly.

Keep in mind, this is all barring that the 412i allows this so for now the vote is merely hypothetical, but could have actual ramifications if permission is granted and the vote is passed in favor of the motion. :)

I will be just happy either way, but the option of Fri. and then early Sat, with a breakdown by midnight sounds the best to me!

I prefer option 1. Because it helps ensure that there are lots of people there at the same time. And because I don't live in Bellingham.

If you start on Friday I see the possibility of the following. Everybody comes to play Friday night and stays until 2-4 AM. Then the last 5 to 10 die hards stay until 8 AM. Then all day Saturday there is nobody there except fopr a few that could not make it on Friday. :(

Yeah that is a concern that I have thought of. however, 7 pm to 8 am still isn't as long as people stay on the normal saturdays (13 hours compared to the 16-18 or so) so I would say that there is reason to believe that people, if they stay till saturday morning, will likely return sometime saturday afternoon. Especially since that's when the tournaments will be. :)

Friday please, remember at 4:00 AM when I was laying in two chairs, groaning and talking about a headache. Well that whooped my ass and I think it'd be nice to start late and end in the afternoon. Anyways, PLEASE START LATE ON FRIDAY.

I get off school at 2:30ish so I could help set up and the likes (even though all I did was carry a TV and plug in a cord (well, tell me something to do))

I stayed from 9:30 AM-6:00 AM.

While I'm still against the idea, it would seem I've been outvoted. As long as the polls don't change significantly, I've given Ender my blessing to try this out in April, but there's still some stuff to get cleared before we can do it.

My main concern, as Ender touched on, is the whole "tired" factor. When I get really tired, I don't generally feel like playing games and I'd much rather curl up and sleep. Naps are great, but they're not going to be able to keep me going for the 41 hours that this plan entails. For this reason, I'd like to start the event not when I'm already tired after work, but after a good night's sleep.

This isn't critical, beings as Ender and I would likely overlap and one of us will always be awake. That moves in on Excessive's point, though, offering a quick example of how this idea splits the BLE community up.

Just my personal opinion, mind you, and again, as long as the polls don't change considerably I see no issue with trying this out.

The thing that would bother me is that I'd play all night long and well into Saturday morning, and after I went home, I'd like to sleep... That's Friday and Saturday gone, my two stay-up-late days of each week. Then I'm left on Sunday to do nothing. I'd like to stay up late on Friday, watch a movie, whatever... then on Saturday LAN it up, and sleep in on Sunday...

 I dont know which way to go with this, I accidentally voted for to change the time though >_< Anyway, whatever works, me staying up for 41 hours, not a problem ^_^ Ive done 32 hours on 5 min of sleep.

True. But it may not agree with some patrons of the LAN. Or even that company, 423(i) or whatevr.

1. Several people here want to be done by Saturday at midnight or no later than 2 am Sunday. That's about the time the core group left last time.

2. There currently doesn't seem to be enough time to play all the games everyone wants to play and have tournaments too. Starting Friday night gives more time.

3. Starting Friday night allows for people to take a nap or go home to catch some sleep and leave them with plenty of LAN to go.

You're right though, we do have a good thing, but it could be a better thing.

We'll prolly try this once and see how it goes.

Stu: for your concern think of it this way. You can come show up for Friday night and play a bit then go out to movies or whatever, sleep in Saturday and come back mid Saturday and play late. You don't even have to come Friday night. We plan on a very scheduled time for tournaments. It is expected that people will be there to play the tournaments and be there beforehand to practice for them. Having the extra night just allows for more relaxed fun gaming and trying out new games and stuff.

Yes Pizza served Saturday night. The LAN starts Friday after dinner time - so eat before you come. ;) There will be a 'breakfast' given Saturday morning, and pizza Saturday night.

Yeah... we'll see how you fair going 48 hours with no sleep at the next lan. That's what it will be if you wake up at 6:00am Friday and don't go to bed until the same time Sunday. You'd need so much caffiene that you'd have THE itchiest trigger finger. And I don't mean that in a good way. You'd be shooting your own team and you wouldn't be able to aim because you'd be shaking soo much. ;)

bah 48 hours is no challange for the might Pyro! I went 53 hours on 5 minutes of sleep once! (Catsohori can vouch for this one)

I think we should revote this friday night thing, I personally am now against it, it'd spread us too far apart, some on friday some on saturday...

Ender
03-29-2004, 03:10 PM
Itsmee brought up a good point about the heat in the summer on SaturDAYs.

Somethings to note:
Should we try this the LAN will STOP (meaning you will be unplugged if you don't do it yourself) at Midnight Saturday.
People who volunteer to help setup will also be volunteering to teardown.
The LANs would start at 7 pm Friday.
It would go all night friday sleeping in any occupied office won't be allowed, but sleeping in the adjacent ones (that are empty) right next to the main LAN room will be okay.
Should you choose to go home and sleep your stuff will be monitored by myself, M4LFUNT10N, and DiscoDave as there will be at least ONE of us always there and awake.
We will be revoting this issue. However, don't go starting your own poll about it please. ;) I'm going to gleen through this one and list all the pro's and cons etc in the new poll.

About the "teardown" issue.....Guys, clean up a bit before you leave. It may be Ender's and Disco's party, but don't trash the place and then leave. Remember, it is an office building- hence people work there before and after we game there. And if you trash it, I will ask you not be allowed back. (Speaking with no authority whatsoever mind you).:)

Basically don't leave the Sh@% work for someone else, if you made the mess. :grumpy:

One big thing.... if you aren't going to finish your drink.... PLEASE pour it out in a sink or toilet. There was sooo much spilt pop on the floor. And then I didn't want to put full/half full cans in the trash bags in case they ripped, so I ended up making tons of trips emptying cans. And then there was the issue of the sticky floors. I'll bring a couple big trashcans next time to make it easier. One for cans, one for trash.

Another thing to consider:
There really aren't that many people who stay all the night through. Maybe 5 people stayed past 2 this time. We're likely to call it quits for everyone at midnight in the future, at the latest 2 because then we have to add several hours for those who stay who have rides coming to get them. That way you aren't waking someone up at 4 in the morning.

So if it does the same, we are likely to lose a bit of time due to that.

Excessive
03-29-2004, 09:30 PM
Will the company on that floor let you set up thursday night? Or will setup and lan start time be the same if you start on friday nights?

Ender
03-29-2004, 09:35 PM
We'd set up at 6:00 as we typically have most of the 'setup' stuff done in less than an hour the way it is now.

The gist of the setup entails hauling everything up - aside from that there's a little taping down of the cords and stuff - though we're looking at getting those rubber things to go over the cords as the tape is becoming a nuisance. We should have all the necessary stuff setup by the start of the LAN at which point the setup volunteers will start bringing their comps up with everyone else and getting their personal space setup. :rup:

So if we start on friday night, then on saturday at midnight, we gotta completely stop? Or will the lan just be over but we can still play into the early morning if we so choose? I also have an offtopic question. What are the surfaces of the tables like for the pc gamers?? I use an optical mouse and if the tables are like the ones we have in the xbox section they are all rigid and bumpy and what not. So will i need to bring a mouse pad? I currently just use the service of my computer desk.

I say you go with option 1 or 2, just as long as you shut the doors at a certain time. It would suck to shell out money and go to the LAN, just to have nobody there. That would be my concern for #1, would everybody come back? And what about us that live kinda far away from the complex? I'm not sure I'd want to make 4 trips there, 3 of which would be on no sleep.
