View Full Version : 9600SE overclocking have I gone insane?

As most of you know I am building another rig.
Well the video card is a ati radeon 9600SE stock speeds of 170/200.
I downloaded ATi tool and played with it a few mhz at a time. I'm just stopping because i need the softmod drivers to save the settings.
Overclocked speeds are 430/230 running stable with all of ATI tools test saying its fine. Is it common for a 9600SE to double its clock speed with ocing? or am I just hallecinating at the number I see on the screen?

Note to self: Do not buy 9600SE from sky.

oops major screw up. Didn't see the set clock button. But doing process again with that step. 430/230 currently

Have you tried running those speeds in-game? Your card doesn't need to work as hard on the desktop. Certian parts of the card aren't stressed on the desktop, if you fire up a game your card might go kazap.

iv gotten through 3dmark05 just fine, then seen some pretty spectacular crashes in Doom3. ever wonder what happens when the lighting system goes out?

He's not insane at all. I've had a 9600 Pro up to 495 Core before ;)

Wont say which/who's or else they might cry at me >_>

Also, my recommendation for you: Go into ATi Tool and click settings. Then check the box that says "Apply Clock immediately after moving slider" After setting this, click scan for artifacts and adjust the clockspeeds until you see artifacts in the window. Let me know what you get to ;)

I would love to educate you on why that statement is ignorant, but I'm afraid you would get mad at me.

Summary: Increasing the clockspeed of a CPU/GPU cannot harm it. Increasing voltage to increase clockspeed can.

OMG it was a joke dude! sheesh! s e n s e t i v e...it's all good baby!
It just kind of sounded like you played with someones card and then didn't tell them, not that you'd do anything to harm someones computer, but why risk making them mad by not telling them? that's all I was saying...no offense intended!

Because no true hardware enthusiast can leave an ounce of power untapped ;) I dont think that it would have pissed them off, especially considering they want by buttsecks, and he asked me to OC it for him when I returned it :)

I always wait till the warranty runs out...parts are few and far between around here...sort of

:stare:

Yes it can. Pushing a chip too hard can absolutely fry it.

Hey Cody do you have any suggestions on what voltage to set for ocing and how to set them? Amazingly my case isn't heating up very bad after running 3dmark05 its about 45C mind you the cpu is oc'ed to 3.1ghz.

OMG are you looking at case temps instead of GPU and CPU temps?

That's not my experience with recent harware.

Take it in this context: Push until you get artifacts, then you've found your maximum stable overclock. As for attempting to push it higher than that, and even trying to fry a chip in this manner, good luck. You'll be unable to make it run stable long enough to do any real damage. For most chips, this ceiling is very low with *stock voltage* and in most cases, damaging your chip is impossible because of these limiting factors. Of course it depends on the chip and it's cooling, but with today's hardware and these limitations, it is very hard to actually fry a chip by upping the clockspeed. Also, if you do manage to fry a chip at *stock voltage* by attempting to up the clockspeed, you have a chip that would have likely failed anyway.

lol, I dont OC P4's very often..

Look at google for an OC guide or something.

I don't know. I pushed my FX5700 card pretty hard and it did fine.

If Cody had said that it overclocking a processor (be it cpu or graphics chip) "doesn't usually" harm it, then I'd agree with him. Even if it doesn't happen terribly often, it most certainly can happen.
