Okay, first off, let me say, I am a diehard Battlefield fan, so anything to do with it will most likely be biased.
This is the first single game I have seen with three CD's but in those three CD's is a Server Admin, MDT, Map Editor, and Instant Patch Downloader, oh yeah, I forgot the game itself, a whopping 1.8 Gigs. So I install all the files and update my video drivers and start it up. I was a bit disapointed at the standard loading up of the DICE and EAGAMES logos, I wanted something new, I'd seen those for over 1.5 Years now and I wanted change, but oh well, the CGI opening really payed off. Just a complete bombshell graphics job for the intro, awesome way to get me pumped for some BF:V. After that it goes to the menu screen, the music is awesome, the menu... is not. It's very nice and user freindly, but the theme is really hard to navigate, oh well, my mod will change that. I join up on a server after turning the Graphics up to max and listen to the music as I read the loading screen, the loading screen is okay, I can see the information getting old to look at after the 1000 time I load up, but hopefully EA changes them in later patches. Loading time takes longer than BF but is still rather fast compared to other games. I get in game and see once again the menus are hard to navigate because of the theme, hopefully its just because im used to BF42. I love the new layouts of classes, where you can be in four classes but each class has two weapons options. I spawn in and am blown away by the graphics, so detailed, skins and models alike looking absolutley great, everything about it is awesome, no flaws or anything. I jump in a huey and discover that the flight controls have a mix of EoD/DC except more loose, so you sweep to the left, and you really start to sweep, its got a learning curve yet is still pretty damn awesome on a first try. Lowering the winch is a little hard because im already flying with two hands on the keyboard and actually grabbing a vehicle to pull is harder. Poof! I see a cloud of smoke on the ground and pretty soon a rocket is blazing towards me, I sweep right but it sweeps right! Shit an SA-7 Guided rocket! I bail as the rocket nails my huey and I parachute down. I notice the water is looking superb, it has a "glassy" feel to it compared to BF42's water. It actually looks like water, I run up the shore and the vegitation blows me away, everywhere there is grass, which is unfortunate for me because the VC pops out of the grass and shoots me with his AK. But during my joy ride someone has dropped in a mobile spawn point, so I spawn there and head out on foot with a sniper rifle, I see a huey flying overhead blaring music with gunners blazing away and the passengers snipe away. Damn, stepped on a booby trap. This goes on until the end of the map, where I decide to call it a day. Boy oh boy, if you loved or hated BF:42, you’ll love BF:V, it features everything about BF42 and has everything BF:V didnt!

It ran bad on my computer even, lol, 1 gig ram, nvidia 5200 (probably because of the fx card), 2.1 ghz processor and it still lags, of course this is .1

Jobe, I just saw some of your stuff in Design Engineering. I didn't realize you went to my school.
Pretty cool stuff there, good job!

Lol, who is this? Lol. All that stuff is pretty old. I need to get some good showcase renders but recently I've been doing lowpoly stuff for mods.

I have a 2.66ghz comp w/ 512mb ram, 9500pro,etc and the game is running alright. Its kind of jerky here and there on the high quality settings. On medium its better. Overall the performance issue isnt' all that bad for me. However for whatever reason its taking up 98-99% of my processing, and overall I'm using 570mb of memory. BFV alone is using about 300,000 when its going, and I have nothing else really open...it certainly doesn't add up to 570mb. Anyone know what is going on. Are there things that take up memory/processing that don't show up in task manager for xp?

windows will take a good 100mbs of memory itself easy.

hehe...just thought I'd mention that ut2k3 was a 3 cd game, and ut2k4 comes in either a 6 cd variety or 2 dvd - yes, it's more than 5 gbs of game!

doesn't ut2k3 come with ut2k4? That would account for 1-2 cds plus all the addons and stoof. Its insane.
look back to the mid 1990s though and games were that long then too. WC3 was 4 or 5 and wc4 was 6. It was loaded with gobs of movies!
ahh the memories with wing commander

Well I'll make some comments on BF V for ya alls. However I am unable to comment on game play because for some reason it wouldn't give me any servers. I tried a bunch of things, but no luck in anything. Any ideas anyone? Also, playing with bots in bf42 was like beating up a small child - both morally wrong and no fun nor challenging, therefore I declined to attempt to do it in BF V cause I figured it would be much the same. A game built for mp shouldn't be played otherwise. ;)
Anyhow, I can comment on loading it up and uh, the cinematic and stuff.
First off, the 3 cds took long as hell to load. I think my 6 cds of 2k4 went faster. Anyhow once it was done I started it up and yeah, seeing those damn logos was lame. Can't believe they didn't do something new. Oh well, I'll just have to fix the ini so they don't show. buwahhahaha. The opening cinematic was...not that great imo. The bf42 one was much much cooler. But it's all good cause getting rid of the logos gets rid of that movie too and well it wasn't great so that's fine with me.
The menu, however, is about the frickin' coolest menu ever. Way cooler than bf42 and easy to navigate. Very stylish and classy. I totally dig it.
That's about all I can say for now though. Can't seem to see any servers online. :(

None of the wing commanders held a candle to either tie fighter or X-wing. However, ALL the wing commanders were light years better than x-wing VS tie fighter. That game must have been the biggest let down in my entire life.

Oh, please. Wing Commander had a the little moving joystick thing for when you were in the ship...turn to the left, and the little joystick moves to the left.
Except, you had to enable Expanded Memory for it to work. :erm:

Oh, if you wanna get into normal jet games, it's gotta be Chuck Yeager, or maybe Falcon 1.0.
Falcon fit on one disk. :woot:

So far my bigest complaint is I can't sort multiplayer games by Ping. I hit the Ping setting above the list of games and the arrow swithes from up to down but the list of games does nothing. I have added "<200" in the box and that helps keep the high lag games out. But I dont see how their game menu could have changed so much internaly from 1942 that this function would not work.
Edit:
I did rename all the movie files so I do not see anymore splash screens now. The game starts up and goes right to the menu.

Crimson Skies is a great game but best flight I think either goes to FS95 (your plain flew apart when you hit stuff), or Strike Commander, which was another Origin game! It was the 13377@r in its day! With a joystick, you just could not beat it!
I do admit that gameplay the x-wing and tie fighter series beats out wing commander. Actually after wing commander 2 the missions weren't that great at all. What it did do is pull you into the story! You really cared about your fellow pilots, you hated your enemy and you just really got to know everyone on that ship! If freespace could pull something like that with its gameplay you'd have an amazing space sim!
Ooh I also loved in WC2 bringing back a ship thats torn apart! Seeing all the holes in it and the ripped up panels on the outside! lol those were the days!

yeah there is something wrong with the sorting by ping thing. The games I'm getting through gamespy seem to be all fairly high also. I rarely see one below 100. I use All Seeing Eye also and there I can find games around 50 ping. This game needs to be patched bad, as both me and my brother are having performance issues most of which have been fixed by some tweaking but its irritating because bf1942 runs fine. Do any of you guys find the M60/Law combo overpowered?
Itsmeee
03-25-2004, 09:56 PM
its a nice combo. I love sniping with the 60. Its like a higher powered famas! w00t!
But it does need patching pronto! The sort by ping thing is annoying as it doesn't work. Runs perfect on my system though

if I'm VC I get the bouncing betty pack or the heat seaker (if there are helos) and run around laying traps and hunkering in brush and popping off people. The VC have to snipe to an extent to win but then thats what they did do so everyone seems to be fine about it. I think its perfectly balanced, just differently them most games.

It's really nicely balanced, I'll find this thread over at another forum later today.

my only thing is that there is nothing really comparable on the VC side. This seems to make the u.s. outnumber the VC a lot of the time. I don't like games w/auto balance much but I have been playing them lately because I am tired of 17U.S. vs. 9VC. I think they just need to make a few slight changes to the m60 like less accuracy or something and then it will be nicely balanced. Its close but not quite there in my opinion.
Itsmeee
03-27-2004, 06:43 AM
the vc is just very different. You can't play both sides the same way which makes for a unique gaming experience.
TheBANDIT
03-28-2004, 09:47 PM
thats true, I like playing as the VC because it does require more team play which is what I like most about the BF series. I never have fun playing on the US side it seems because two thirds of the team are a bunch of people attempting to live out some Rambo fantasy. Part of the reason the M60 is such a problem for me is because I suck, I'm sure better players have less problems with it.
