So a few of you know that I was having problems getting the Xbox controller calibrated to play UT2k4. So I've got a new idea. I think it should work and make it a little ergonomic. I'm going to mess around using the controller with my left hand to control movement and a couple other functions. Then use my new mouse with my right hand for aiming/shooting/etc. I believe I'll have enough buttons at hand for most games too.

Interesting, I still say KEYBOARD AND MOUSE r0xx0rz!

Think about it though. With WASD you are talking about analog controls. You don't have any sort of sensitivity, and you are using 3 fingers for something 1 finger can do with better precision. I'd say the thumbstick is to keyboard for movement, as the mouse is to thumbstick for looking/aiming.

I hate WASD but love ESDF. (E forward, S strafe left, D back, F strafe right) It frees up my pinky to use q, a, and z for things like ducking and flashlights and such, without losing the ability to strafe left.

I personally use ESDF. I don't know how you can use x. That's a weird stretch for my middle finger.

I could use C, but then what button would crouch?

no you all are off by miles. THE BEST controls are asdf.

A=Strafe left
S=Strefe right
D=Secondary fire
F=Primary fire

Mouse left=Forward
Mouse right=Backwards

This way your hand is in a natural keyboard typing position meaning not finger slipping, no hitting wrong keys and you can stay in that position for an indefinate amount of time. Most people that have tried it scorn it after 3 mins of play then go back to making gang signs with there hands as they try to crouch and go forward at the same time, but this control scheme is where its at.

Hmm, as strange as it sounds... that sounds like it would work really well. What do you use for crouch?

Crouching isn't a problem with my new mouse. I use the two side(thumb) buttons for crouching and jumping.

It'd be weird to hold the mouse buttons to walk forward.... that just sounds strange. But your keyboard layout is pretty cool, I may use that to play Halo PC if the USB thing doesn't work.

I'd probably do it like this though, cuz I couldn't get used to the mouse movin' you forward or back:
F - Forward
A - Backward
S - Strafe Left
D - Strafe Right

I'd probably use my thumb button (on my mouse) for crouch, the scroll button for zoom, left click for shoot, right click for reload, spacebar for jump, R for grenade... um...

Now I'm excited to play.

I'd actually not thought about usuing the keyboard to move. That would probably work really nicely. I thought at first you might have trouble crouching or something while moving but actually it should work perfectly! I might actually try that sometime as it probably is more natural to shoot with my trigger finger.

I like mouse buttons for triggers because they are more sensitive. There is too much pressure needed on the keys to use them as a trigger. Your reaction times are probably suffering.

interesting thought. Perhaps I can improve on my RVS game ?

It's sooo not appropriate... ;)

I'll tell you the first half.

Q: How do you know if a blondes been using your computer?

i use aswd (but esdf sounds like a good idea) and then i use shift to crouch, space bar to jump, q is lean left, and e is lean right, then i have F be my last weapon. In sof2 you switch from shotty to ak kind of often, its a pretty nice button to have. ctrl is walk.

Whiteout on the screen.

Keyboard setup is really a matter of preference and comfort, but I one thing I will tell you is that a joystick or gamepad will never be as good as a mouse for controlling a first person shooter on computer. The amount of precision and control of movement speed you get with a mouse really can't be beat.

That being said, my recommended keyboard setup would be to use the letters for arrow keys... either wasd, esdf, and I've also heard tfgh is good because it's in the center of the keyboard so you can reach a lot of keys with that hand, for weapon switching, chat binds, and whatnot.

As for mouse setup, I always reserve two buttons for primary and alternate fire, and then bind the rest of my mouse buttons to weapons. I have shield gun as thumb button, lightning gun as mousewheel click, and wheel up/wheel down set to scroll through whatever guns I have. Then I bind the rest of my weapons to number keys.

This particular setup can be modified however you want, but the basic thing you should shoot for is having a specific key or button bound to every single weapon in the game, and be able to reach those binds quickly.

#1 nope. Different answer.

#2 I wasn't talking about aiming. I was talking about movement. Thumbstick is to keyboard as mouse is to joystick. I'm talking about using a thumbstick with you left hand for movement and using your right hand with a mouse for aiming.

I like the whiteout answer. :P

I would never use a thumbstick for the movement in UT because of the dodging. You need to double-tap movement keys in order to dodge and I don't know how this would work using a thumbstick. The game was designed with a keyboard in mind. There is no way you could master UT's movement using a joystick.

Well, for us consolers double taps aren't hard at all. Anyone that's used to playing fighting games can do doubletaps with incredible ease.

That aside, how many games use double taps as a dodge?
