ok the other afternoon I was driving home. The truck in front of me suddenly breaks so I slow down and was going to stop in time if it wasn't for the fact that the guy behind me decided his accord was actually the dalorian from back to the future and if he went fast enough he could go back to the day before and avoid the traffic. Sadly for me, my car, and the truck in front of me McFly was wrong in his theory and simply slammed into me which shoved my car under the truck in front of me.

Anyway now I need a new car. The duder was uninsured but luckily I carry uninsured drive shit and will hopefully be getting about $1000 from my car. Anyway I have about $600 right now and should have about $950+$1000 from old car by next week. So i need a car for around that much or something 1997-now that is under $4500 (I can pay for about a $4000 loan but they don't loan for older then 1997).

I just want reliable with good gas mileage.

so far I'm looking at a Peugeot, and a few other older cars which I'm meh about. I love the peugeot but I have yet to even see how it runs.

you are sueing the uninsured guy right? (or your insurence co is?) This would be a good idea as it would teach him the lesson to never drive uninsured.

as far as cars are concerned, I don't have many recomendations. I havn't shopped for a car for a while and I don't know what's out there or what the prices are.

Get a newer geo metro they get like 52 mpg and there cheap. Around $3000 for a 2001 with low miles like 30-40k they last till about 200k, and there easy and cheap to fix compared to others.

It would be rare for a geo to last 200K milles. The engine may last that long but the rest of the car will fall appart. And while they may tell you 50+ mpg its realy much lower (30-35 mpg) unless its all highway miles at 55mph. They are a cheap car and repairs and parts are expensive. You would be beter off geting a honda or toyota. Still a reliable car, but repairs will be less and they are built a bit better than a geo. I had one. I put 60k miles on it and it was tired. It was a good car for what I needed. But Looking back I wish I would have spent a little more for something better.

I have one 170k runs great averages out to about 50mpg 5spd.

Hondas? THey may last but the parts are insanely priced. Btw geo metro parts are cheap like trannies run around $150 for a 94 geo auto

For starters, I would reccomend you to www.autotrader.com. Fill out all the information...how far away you wanna look, price range, car make/type. You can find many vehicles on there and you can even see them, just gotta get where they are. Otherwise, your local classified ads or even perhaps...eBay? I bought my old Eclipse on ebay and got a GREAT price. Most people wouldn't buy a car from eBay though, so check autotrader!

Check the Echo. It's great for finding cars. Also look around for some car auctions. You get awesome deals at those.

Used tranny? I had to repalce the wheel bearings in mine. $160 per wheel. Just for the bearings.

Anyway. Check with a mechanic before you buy any used car. Just ask them what their experience has been with that make and model. Or what ther have heard. They don't just see one car that does good or bad, they see lots. It could save you lots later down the road. Some will do a check of the car you want to buy for less than $100. Don't ever take the word of a small used car lot and their so called saftey inspections.

so far I'm looking at a Peugeot

Unless you have a mechanic that knows peugeots... or you personally know your stuff, AND don't mind having a hard time finding replacements parts, and don't mind it leaking oil etc. Sure. Buy a Peugeot.

you sound like you have personal experience with them? Anyway, talked to the guy today and its had 4 owners at least and some issues. So while it would be a really nice car it may be a lemon.

cars I was already looking at were the honda accord and the toyota camary. I'm driving a 97 camary right now and its amazing, reminds me why i fell in love with them a while ago. the problem with them is for under $5000 your looking at a car in bad condition :/

Puegeots are great cars, but it would be like owning an american car in europe that doesn't usually get imported to europe. Because it's French and there aren't very many here, it's hard to find people that know what they are doing with them, and replacement parts need to be shipped from europe.

well talked to the peugeot guy and that specific model (from my research) is very reliable, but the guy sorta scared me off a bit. I think there might be some stuff really wrong with it. but those cars are amazing, actually way to amazing really, looks like a vw passat, 130 without breaking a sweat, fairly reliable. It would probably get me into trouble so best if it doesn't turn out. Looking at some of those other cars, thanks for the ideas.
