View Full Version : BLE Mailing List Info

Hey, people. Many of you may have received a mailing from us a week or two ago, specifically those of you who hadn't signed up for this coming lan.
That'll be more or less a monthly event, and will generally occur a couple weeks before each lan. We'll also be mailing out a quick bit to those who do sign up for the lan a few days before the event (look for that soon).
Before we send that out, though, I want to quickly note that you can exclude yourself from these by clicking on User CP ==> User Options ==> and clicking no on the option of allowing Admins or moderators to email you.
Ender and I both hate spam, so it won't hurt our feelings =).
Those of you out of town llamas and/or krispy kreme addicts may also want to check on this, although I think I already set it to "no" for just about all of you.
Contact information you give us will not be released or sold to anyone, your privacy is important to us, yadda yadda yadda.
Comments/feedback/criticisms are welcome. We realize mailing lists are dangerous ground, and if you think this is a mistake we want you to let us know. Likewise, if you like the idea because you just don't have time to keep up with the forum and such, we want to hear from you as well. :rup:

The previous emailing was sent specifically to people who had not signed up for this weekend.
Our grand plan for the time being is to send out two emailings per month...one in the middle to announce our lan to people who haven't signed up, and one as a quick reminder to those who have signed up.
We're trying to find the fine line between not keeping everyone up to date, and being annoying =).

or 3, or possibly even 4 depending on how much of a demand there is.

C'mon... we're talking PC and X-Box gamers here... you're going to need one box of Krispy Kreme for every two players... so right now, we're looking at 19 boxes!!!

That's a remarkably brilliant idea! ;).
I brought Krispy Kremes to a previous lan and meant to for BLE January, but forgot. :o
I'm pretty sure we'll have them this time around. I can't promise, though, because we're still working out where to spend our money to get the most bang for the buck, and quite honestly, $20 can go a bit farther in other areas than it will at Krispy Kreme.
But again, I'm pretty sure we'll have them, and if we don't, we'll have some appropriate replacement =).

Honestly don't know how much they are there. I only buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts. ;)
I wouldn't worry yourself about getting doughnuts...we'll take care of it, it's just a matter of whether we get Krispy Kremes or Cost Cutter (or other brand).
Save your money for the BLE Gathering in April. :nerd:
(More on that at the LAN).

Krispy Kreme has the proper Sugar amount necessary for this event... we need to keep it going!!!

Yes, everyone who wants to bring something to this LAN that you don't have too (like food and stuff to share):
Please don't worry about it! Save yer money for the Gatherings that we do every so often (next on in April - Go Karts! :woot: ). BLE provides all the soda, all the snacks, the dinner, the lan equipments yadda yadda...this is what makes us feel good so don't ruin it! ;)

What type of system will we be running on? the lan system

Well, we were hoping we'd have our nice shiny new linksys to run it in time, but that'll have to wait till march.
So, this should be the last lan for the worn out D-Link. It's a basic 4 port router. That's our backbone. :erm: It'll take us to the t1 and the inArweb and then it'll have 3 servers on it. The last port will connect to the 24 port switch which serves as the main connector - which will also have a couple/few servers on it. Then there are 3 8-ports and 1 5-port (usually given to xboxers) that are available.
Everything is 10/100 speed. (wish we had gb, but oh we may someday!)

Assuming I don't forget, I'll be "borrowing" the linksys from my work. ;)

From what I have read it is overrated for a desktop system anyway. Hard drives speeds keep the transfers down.

good to know! :rup: ty..I've never actually read anything on it I always just figured it'd be nice to have for the backbone connections. :)

100mb connection = 12.5 megabytes per second.
Gigabit = 125 megabytes per second.
The highest of the high end hard drives (I'm talking native Serial) can transfer 150megabytes per second if I'm not mistaken. I think mine, which is still pretty beefy, can do 133.
Of course, all these numbers are "theoretical", and real performance will probably be around half, give or take a football field. That's also simply between two computers...bandwidth will drop as you add throw more computers into the mix.
Conclusion: Gigabit kicks ass. It wouldn't really have any effect on lan gameplay for a 50 person network...maybe our pings would drop from 15ms to 10ms, or something.
Expect BLE to move to a Gigabit network sometime next year, if we're still stupid enough to be doing this (which I imagine we will be).

toight! I'll be saving up for a 10/100/1000 nic :p
Gigabyte lan is actually a good move as it has more numbers. As you can see by this chart that I made. You can see the distince advantage of the yellow line over the blue line.

also, if u r playing a game, i think not that most of the stuff is written to the RAM, instead to the HD(?)

Yes but most multiplayer games are written for the internet. For users with 56K and DSL/Cable users. Do you think a game maker would make it so that much info needed to be sent on the network?
when you are just downloading a file from another comp it will be from the hard drive. When SATA drives start to reach their full potential it will be worth it. By then the price of a GB switch will be more reasonable too.
