...that HL2 runs off of? What's the Havoc engine and where did it come from/who made it?
For some reason, I thought that Havoc and Source were the same or made by the same people something like that I don't know (don't care too much but am a tad curious). Enlighten me.

havoc is phyiscs, you can see it in Max Payne 2 (very nice), source is the actual game engine. I believe both are in house (correct me if I'm wrong)

I believe that FarCry runs off the Havoc engine.
Half Life 2 runs off of the Source engine.

its ok, though bad timing, coulda added this to my resume of kickassness (or mere normalism)
but hump that poopoo I kick ass! <--lawls at glasses. BOW BEFORE ME ALL WHO POSTED AFTER ME FOR I WONDID THIS THREAD!
edit: can't remember the farcry engine name. It has part of there company name in it kryotek??? its like the kry engine??
edit 2:researched, and missed the million dollar question by a letter. Its the Cry Engine.

Yeah FarCry is Crytek Engine...
Ok so now what's the difference? If they're both in the same deal...how does the physics relate to the engine? Aren't the physics part of the engine? So in effect, if something is using Havoc physics, it's showing all the Source would ever show?

Havoc is something relatively new in game and software development, middleware.
Preaty much they focus on only one aspect of developing a product that can be used in a wide range of applications and software and then licence their technology out to others for them to use it.
So when you see Havoc physics, you are just seeing code plugged into a 3D engine that is executed in real time; both the 3d and havok engine, so they become one and the same. It could be comperable to a plug in for a web browser; you have IE6 and within IE6 you get better content using Flash and Java, that being said, Flash and Java can both be used in other applications (such as: stand-alone or in Mozilla). allthough it is probly much more complicated then that.
there are many other middleware companies, just none that come to mind.
Havok could most likely be put into any engine, but you'd have to ask them (lol havok in Doom2)

ah so that clears it up then. So then HL2 could have more impressive physics than another game due the source works with Havoc?

the question isn't it having a more impressive physics engine then any other FPS, right now it does. hands down. bar-none.
gaw, when CS:S beta was out, it was preaty amazing to see tires rolling around, being able to roll barrels on the ground, shoot a can and have it jump up then roll a little. The magnet gun in HL2 will forsures be something to use.
I'm planning on pre ordering HL2 sometime this week and you can check it out @ the lan. although i should pick up T:V or SWB (I can only afford 1 + a vid card ATM), so that is all up in the air.
why the interest?

T:V > SWB
HL2 > Both

I'm trying to figure out why I should be excited for HL2. I'm looking for any reason. It's hard to sell it to people when you're not excited for it, and I'm supposed to be selling it to people. It's kind of like GTA San Andreas - I'm supposed to be selling a certain amount of pre-orders for that game every day, but it's difficult when 1.) I think sony makes crap for consoles and 2.) GTA is a game series/idea that has never appealed to me. I just plain think it's stupid.
HL1 never interested me, since I came on the fps scene long after it's popularity. CS certainly never will interest me I wager - unless they take out the speed of the game, jumping, and money system. However, an impressive physics engine will be something I can grab on to as a selling point for HL2 itself, and honestly and truthfully say that I would like to play the single player of the game just to check it out. :rup:

T:V > SWB
HL2 > Both
rofl - T:V, SWB = MP, HL2 = SP
And MP will always be superior to SP - how boring is that to play a game all by yourself? The fun in gaming is the social aspect imo. ;)
Unless you're talking about CS - but then it would be: Every MP game in the world > CS
Unless they change it pretty drastically. First to go should be the money system. Then jumping, then the speed should be toned down. When that happens, then I'll prolly give it a shot. :rup:

So basically, they would have to turn it into RavenShield.
That's why I prefer CS, and I'll be dropping off my copy of RvS today at EB.
Also: Have you ever played CS for more than an hour? :\
And in all honesty, I think the gamespeed of CS and RvS are very close to equal.

CS feels twice the speed of rvs. And yes I've played it more than an hour. (hrm wait - untrue, I haven't played ANY CSS - but cs 1.6) Seriously the money system is jacked - Hey lets give the winning team better options so they can keep winning! :woot: That's a pretty twisted notion of balance imo.
Sounds to me like the game would be more fun to just screw around in. Y'know, jump up on boxes/barrels, have someone shoot them out from you - maybe stack like three guys on one and see if the physics do anything crazy when there's nothing underneath them anymore. To bad there's no jeeps - could have a lot of fun with those physics then!
btw - rvs isn't worth selling to EB. But I'll gladly take it off your hands. :rup: You get like $2 store credit. $1 for AS. :slant:

Actualy FeaR if you see this - you and !ghrog should come to Eb before 5:30 today...I need to discuss more on your "idea" ;)

you can be excited to sell it because its going to raise the bar once again, because the stuff in this game you will have never seen before. Its going to be great :D
As far as san andreas, when has a GTA game not been good? I mean they took it from the well selling 2d into 3d and people loved it more! I mean thats a total john carmack there, and if they can get away with stuff like that they are not going to make it shit. Instead of being on another island its going to be larger more usable terrain, its graphics are going to beat all previous gta games, and its story line is going to be very different again.
ghrog  good analogy on havocs engine :)

WTF?
Have you even tried GTA? I've not played any before GTA3, but both GTA3 and Vice City kicked massive amounts of ass.

Yeah I played the first one...the whole concept just never appealed to me. It was fun for a bit to throw people out of their cars and stuff and get teh cops after you...but it got old real fast. I guess I just don't have any interest in being a thug. :(

You should really try GTA3 or Vice City.
