View Full Version : Oct. 23 BLE MidLAN...uh, LAN! w00t

Date: Friday Oct 22
Times: Doors open at 6 pm - everyone is kicked out Saturday Morning
Place: 412i 4th floor - 4164 Meridian
Cost: $5 - this is only to pay for the building rental and a possible upgrade to BLE networking and any left over goes toward BLE's big November Surprise! :woot:
Yeah, so this is just a LAN - not like a regular BLE LAN with pizza, prizes, snacks, drinks and all...we're not bringing any of that. No Friday night setup either. Nope, Dave and I feel we get a break and time to play, so we're coming to own you all up and play games (Tribes V!). We are not running this LAN - nobody is, just come to play and play you will. No game of the hours, nope, nothing like a BLE LAN, 'cept it will be all us BLEer's LANning it up..oh and did I mention - getting owned by Dave and me? ;) yes, oh yes, you will be asking, can I get more owned by DD and Enduh please??? You will, oh you will.
There aren't any signups really for this either. There will be an unofficial signup (http://www.bellinghamlan.com/forum/showthread.php?p=45121#post45121) thread so we can have an idea of who to expect but our events page is going to be getting set up for the November surprise (I hope I hope) so we won't be using it. With that, it's based on a first come first serve as well, so we've got 40 spots so you may want to get there early! Oh yeah....one more thing:
BLE IS NO LONGER PROVIDING FOR XBOX OR CONSOLE ONLY PATRONS. Due to problems in the past of people taking other peoples stuff we don't have an xbox part of our LANs. I'm sorry that a few had to ruin it for the many, but that's how it has to be. BLE is a LAN for BRING YOUR OWN COMPUTER only now.
So there you have it - discuss all things related to this in this thead, and post if you're coming in the other soon-to-be-posted thread. (http://www.bellinghamlan.com/forum/showthread.php?p=45121#post45121) :rup:

:rdown: Weak. :rdown:
Instead of fixing something that's broken, you just throw it away?
Ninja Edit:
Instead of ruining it for the honest console gamers, why don't you just ruin it for the not-so-honest gamers. Make it a hassle. I mean, I'll bring you a list of the equipment that I brought, and give you that list when I check in and pay. You double check the list to make sure it matches exactly what I have (nothing more, nothing less) and when I check out and leave, you double check that the list matches what I brought. Pain in the ass? Yes. But it's worth it to me to have 15 other players to play with.

To answer both Stu and Sonome...It is possible that we could bring the consoles back. However, that would require someone who we trusted that did nothing but consoles. Dave and I aren't console players, so we're not going to spend a LAN keeping an eye on the consoles.
Any other method of prevention would cost quite a bit of money, OR would likely have to be some sort of library type system that require someone getting interupted on a regular basis during the LAN. Not cool for whoever that ends up being.
If we had someone who played nothing but consoles and was always in the rooms keeping the flow of things and all keeping an eye out then yeah we could bring it back, but I don't know anyone of our current crowd that qualifies for that.
Before when the consoles were in the same room as the PC's it wasn't a big deal, but now that they're in the offices it's just too hard to monitor - hell, I'm willing to bet that the majority of consolers in the past were getting in for free because they never even had to walk by me to get to the console area, and I certainly was too busy to keep going over there and checking to make sure everyone paid. It's just too exploitable without a person constantly there.

That's a good idea stu - but it really requires another person to manage...Dave and I have too many other issues that need working out constantly to monitor that. Why'd you move away???

Ender: I know you guys dont know me all too well because I'm pretty new and all. But I'd be willing to do so, Pain in the ass to stay in the rooms and all but to get that priviledge back I'd be willing to. When you guys possibly develop a more trust in me(if you sort of do already, dunno), I would not mind doing that. There could be possible otherways of doing this, it is a pain in the ass I admit because some people screwed it up for others. The "library" way is okay. You could always get someone to be at a table like the checkin thing but I dont think we could find anyone who'd be willing to sit there for a long time, doing nothing and getting them to search what people brought, and they would have to hand in a list of what they brought at the begining of it. You could always get the xboxers to hold onto their posessions at ALL TIMES when exiting the rooms or the buildings. But that can be a hassel sometimes. In my opinion since the stolenness of Val's burnout 3 kind of broke this whole thing. No offence to Val but, if it was that big of a deal that it could get stolen, he COULD have taken it with him because I recall me and val going out to get the pizzas at the last lan. well from Little ceasers that is. which is prolly when it was taken. I'm guessing. But the thing on keeping your personal belongings on your person at all times is a pretty good idea, it can be hasseling but if your games mean THAT much to you, I think it'd work out nicely.

Suggestions:
1. Collateral - The Console Gamers are currently paying $10 for unlimited LAN play and good ol' grub. This is quite the steal for a night of entertainment, in my opinion. You can make all console gamers put down a $20.00 deposit that would be paid back to them when they leave. Now, you're charging $30.00 for Xboxers, but they'll get $20.00 at the end of the night. When you check them in, you catalogue what they brought in with them. For some, this would be easy (one controller) for others like myself, it would be harder (TV, Xbox, Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, four controllers, et cetera). At the end of the night, when they're leaving, they come to collect their deposit - and HIRED CONSOLE BOUNCER checks to see if their current possessions match what they had when they left.
2. Library - get a room, that only you, Ender the Keymaster, have a key to. Lock up EVERYTHING in this room - and provide those that feel the need a place to store their stuff. You could use one room for only console player gear, and one room for only PC player gear if you have the resources. Bestow this key to the HIRED CONSOLE BOUNCER - all trust goes into him/her. Whenever someone says, "I need a controller" or "Can we play this game instead?", said HIRED CONSOLE BOUNCER would go to the locked room, and retrieve the item, while simultaneously writing down their name (must be good at multitasking).
3. The Rule Of Four - For the Xbox side, you usually need 4 xboxes, 4 TVs, and four controllers for each Xbox - not to mention 4 games for each. You get four volunteers to bring one set of equipment (one xbox - four controllers - whatever game their playing). I imagine that TVs could still be provided by whoever wants to - since it's a lot harder to stick a TV in one's pocket. Those Four that bring the gear are then responsible for their gear, and accept responsibility. Now, when people come with no gear, it'll be rather obvious when they're leaving with a game or controller.
4. Frisk - Yeah, it'd hate to have this job, since our BLE group here is 98% male, but if it comes down to it, you have a room off to the side, before you get to the gaming area. Have the patrons empty their pockets onto the table, and whatever gear they bring, you check through it and catalogue it. Then, when they're leaving, they come back, you double check the gear, and ask them to empty their pockets again, and then you pat them down, make sure there aren't any game or controller sized bulges in the pocket areas. Sucks, but it'll get the message across.
Personally, I think the idea of a $20.00 deposit would be good.
If I still lived up in B-Ham, I'd be happy to accept the CONSOLE BOUNCER position - for a hefty wage!!!

Personally, I think the idea of a $20.00 deposit would be good.
The 20$ deposit in my opinion also is a great idea. Also the "rule of four" idea is great to. You could possibly do both to get an even STRONGER point across. the Library idea blows because I'm pretty sure That someones not going to want to stop what they are doing to get something. Unless they are on the Xbox side of it, which would not be a bad idea. I'm pretty sure the "frisking" idea is Not all so good because well....*twitch* Your right Light saber man, 98% of it IS males. if you had a male person to do the frisking, it might be a lil difficult for them to do both the guys and girls. so 20$ = Great, Rule of 4 = Good/Great, Library = Soso in my opinion.
Also, I admit not much of the BLE is Xboxers. But still, Some people might be missed if there was no Xbox =P

Do you really think that all those xboxers are going to want to come to the LAN, get frisked, have to bring another $20, and always have to ask to get the games they want and stuff? It sounds like more of a hassle than it's worth, to me.
DiscoDave
10-06-2004, 08:01 AM
It's more of a hassle to us as well...and honestly, pat downs isn't going to prevent anyone from making off with a cd, and people could easily run down to their car, deposit a disc there, and return for the $20 deposit. A library system would be a nightmare to maintain, plus people can still run off with whatever game is in the console. It makes it a little trickier, but grabbing it during pizza break or something would be easy to accomplish.
It's really difficult to keep the discs readily available for play along with preventing them from being stolen due to the open-ended nature of the whole x-box gaming area. If people WANT to steal, they can find a way.

Stu you're suggestions are good, but they all required the said help and bouncer. We don't have the budget to pay someone to do that, so someone would have to volunteer - which means they don't really have any fun at the LAN. =/
Sonome I appreciate your offer to help as well, and not that I don't trust you, but very few guys are going to take a 13 year old girl bouncer seriously methinks. It's likely to put you in a worse position than you'd ever want to be.
We're not giving up on the xboxers - we're just postponing them until we find a way to do it that works. I hate to say it but we've got a couple other things going atm so it's not a top priority. Hopefully we'll find a solution soon.

The ideas are all great on paper, but in reality its not going to work that way. Nobody is going to be able to effectively manage it during the chaos of the lan party.... people constantly moving around, new games played, getting drinks, pizza, bathroom runs, etc., etc.
There are two viable options IMO.
-Charge xboxers $10, which covers the food and venue. Xboxers must bring their own equipment, including tv's, consoles, controllers, games, etc. Each person who brings his own equipment is reponsible for it, as BLE will basically provide a room and not pay any attention to it. No xbox live or connect since that requires further BLE administration.
-Charge xboxers $15, which covers food and venue, and BLE will provide at least 1 xbox and TV. Participants must bring their own controllers, and any games that BLE does not provide. The only games BLE will provide are those that are installed on their heavily modded box that has all its games on its hard drive. Any items brought by the participants are solely their responsibility. BLE may provide more boxes or TV's in the future, but would still only provide the games that are installed on the hard drive of the box.
Both of these options require minimal involvement of BLE admins, and volunteer staff, and does not leave anybody's lended equipment exposed. It lets the xboxers still participate, but they have to bring their own gear to do so (just like the BYOC guys), and its their ultimate responsibility to keep track of it.

This thought has crossed my mind as well...I'd really like to have a pair of modded x-boxes loaded with pre-loaded games (along with a pair of tvs), but it's...."difficult" to justify that kind of cost, and would certainly require a hiked up cost, and I'm not sure people would be willing to pay $15 for a day of x-box gaming...and, God forbid, if someone were to walk out with one of those modded x-boxes loaded with games, the heavens would rain fire and the moon would turn red.

As far as the Xbox goes, I have 2 ideas. Last time I thought you guys had more than 1 console unit, just bring extras, and leave only the most popular games in the unit, and duct tape them shut.
Or just everyone chip in for some mod chips, and then burn a bunch of games and no one will care if they're stolen as much.

Ender: I appreciate the fact you trust me kinda I'm assumeing. Thank you. And I appreciate the fact of what you said. I feel sort of silly for this but my mother came up with an idea...Not sure if it would work compleately. But,
My mothers idea (Yes I get my mum involved with alot of things I do) is, to do with the checkin table thing. I'm sure none of the BLE wants to sit around for hours and do nothing. So my mum was thinking of /PARENTS/ doing this. I.e. my mother said she'd be willing to stay and help out with it for a good 4-5 hours. so you could always get four parents to take a shift of 4 hours. Which meaning when a person comes in with Xbox gear we get a plastic container. and I know its a hassel to get up and ask for a game. But we could get the parents to do that. She also had the idea of giving identification. so that if someone DID steal something when they had it. The BLE could call them and ask them where it is. What happened to it. Ect.
Or....
You could get some of the guys to sit at the table for a good 3 hours and THAT would be their enterance fee. Not a very good idea. But it might work.
Also I know not alot of people like to have their parents around. But hey, its a possible way.
It's just an idea, Maybe you can build off of that.

Sonome, the point remains that nobody is going to stop someone from sticking a game disk in their coat or pants, and walking away with it. Without strip searches EVERY time someone comes and goes there is no way to stop the theft of x-box gear left unatended.
I would rather BLE do away with x-box, and not have to resort to martial law.

Legal waivers at this sort of thing are pointless, beings as someone could easily swipe whatever game you checked out.
We tried having everyone keep an eye on things, and that didn't work...I don't really think that having one person keep an eye on things will work better, and we still have the issue where it's a hassle to maintain a library system with someone getting bugged to swap games out all the time.
I appreciate your mom's volenteering for this, Sonome, but it's a lot to ask for anyone.

This is definitely part of it. I feel used, abused, and victimized by consolers. I know, it's probably only one or two people that are responsible for this, but we haven't had any such problems with the pc crowd even though we usually have 2ce as many pc people as consolers.
The people who come to play PC have formed an incredible community around us. Compared to many other lan parties, I think you'd find we all know and trust each other far more than typical. This isn't Ender and I did anything special...this is just because we happened to attract an above average crowd, but that crowd extends almost exclusively to PC.
There's a few console people whome I really trust, and who have made an effort to join in with the community and give us a reason to trust you, and you know who you are, but overwhelmingly the x-box people have not done this. Instead, we've been stolen from.
*shrug*
Obviously it pisses me off, and I'm not inclined to work very hard to keep the same demographic that has robbed from those nice enough to loan us their equipment. Maybe if I was a bigger man I'd be more inclined to keep trying, but I'm not. I'm a very small man.

It's broke, and even though it looks like we're just throwing it away - that isn't the case. We're working on a way to fix it, but until it's fixed properly, we're not using it.
As for the whole LAN stopping for a PC person losing something - that happened once. Excessive lost his camera (worth about the cost of an xbox and several games) and informed us immediately, giving us a chance to do something about it. We would have done the same thing for an xboxer. Thing is with this last case of Val's Burnout 3, we didn't hear about it until late in the LAN, when most of the xbox crowd was already gone for the night, and then the xbox LAN did stop (as well as for many PC people who stopped to help come look) while we scoured the area for the game. Had we known earlier we might have been able to find it, as in the case of Excessive's camera.
Seriously though, we're exploring options to remedy the issue, we're not just throwing it away. Hell, BLE bought and xbox and a ton of games as well as a tv just for this so I don't imagine we're likely to just disregard that investment so easily.
DiscoDave

God forbid a PC person comes up missing something - the whole thing will get shut down.
The way to prevent this is for everyone to keep an eye on their neighbors. It's easy for any jackass to sneak past one or two "guards"...it's virtually impossible for them to sneak past 40.
And we've not had any troubles with the PC crowd whereas we've had continual troubles with X-Boxers, so they aren't really the same situation.

Well, I'd have to add up how much my system cost total, then I'd figure out how many hours I've used it, then I'll divide that by the number of hours you'd be using it, and charge you for that. :D
Just kidding, btw. I won't be able to make it to the next LAN, and in November there's no way I'm giving this thing up.

I got a plan...
Let's start a fund to get Shadow a computer. :)
Build.one. Look for parts. Get on classifieds. Jeez. READ THE PAPER. Muwha. It works..just try to be careful of the people with crappy parts that just want to get rid of them..I got one so it would boot up but than it decided to be a bitch and not let it run...I got it up once and it never started again. Bitch. Oh well. But seriously go and look in like "The echo" they have some stuff there. or just the newspaper in general.
