It's an easy game to play once you get the hang of it...but takes a lifetime to master

SO then, this, as in most other cards games, amounts to a deal of luck. Only 9 cards are dealt in total, out of a 52 card deck. It's still luck as to what cards as dealt, and even more luck as to the 2 cards the players are dealt if they work well with the 5 community cards to their advantage. The skill lies in the ability to make a better hand than the other with what you're given, but if he's given better cards hands down, where's the skill?
Seems just like all other card games - comes down to luck in the end. You can have a few moments where you can shine with your wit and skill and make something cool happen with your cards, but it was luck that put those cards in your hand in the first place.
This isn't directed at anyone btw...just making an observation as I've heard Hold 'Em called the most skill required card game there is. I'm just being picky...;)

actually, ender, the skill comes with bluffing and chooseing when to play, when to fold, and how much to bet to scare the other people into folding. a good way to see it in action is to watch the celebrity poker tour on bravo, or world poker tour on the travel channel (the celebrity poker tour is more entertaining and informative about the rules though)
And count me in as soon as I'm moble again. and Texas Holdem all the way.

I understand when the skill comes in - hearts is one of my favorite card games (along with mtg - different style but still a card game) and I will always hold that hearts takes a lot of skill...but it still doesn't change the fact that luck sets the stage. That always bothered me about both hearts and mtg. Specially in mtg when you can build a really good deck, but get the worst possible draw ever so that your opponent's deck, which may not be as good, is now on par with yours. Hearts was similar...sometimes you just get such a bad deal...the skill in hearts is magnified after that though...because you're playing 3 other people...that's 3 others you have to bluff and trick, instead of just 1.

Texas Holdem' is the only good game. Requires a lot of skill considering the top 10 people are basically the same guys every year.

Unlike hearts. There is a lot of skill in knowing when to hold them, and when to fold them

I would volunteer to be the dealer all night, I know the rules to Texas hold em, and can deal a straight game. this is one of those games where it really sucks and becomes confusing if the dealer switches around throughout the game.

ESPECIALLY if the game is populated with newbies

Do you think it would be ok for BLE to sponsor a gambling night for minors? I don't think so... that's not to say that you couldn't do it on your own, but I don't think you should involve BLE Proper.

? They don't have to sponser it, jsut everybody who wants to can come just bring your $10 and we'll play. But we have to have it organized, and what better way than through BLE?

I'd suggest pm-ing the interested parties and setting it up that way. And yeah, keep the name of BLE away from it all. ;)

Well, I suppose you could see it as all the interested persons already posted in this thread, which is how we know they're interested, and since you're the one wanting to organize, then a more proactive approach - such as pm-ing them and getting it all set up - is expected of you, naturally.
