sorry I was mistaken, was thinking of the ATI catalyst control panel option to OC your card automatically based on its temp (only took my 9600XT from 499mhz to 526 or some such)

using ati tool my card crapped out around 540mhz, said last safe setting was 537.50, so im leaving it at 535

my card is running @274.5 mhz how would I determine how safe a setting increase is? I'm using powerstrip, anyone know anything about it? should I mount an extra fan on the card?

Dont use powerstrip. You need ATI Tool because it has a preview render so you can check for artifacts.

I'd be glad to dink with your videocard at the lan and show you how it's done, just make sure you have good cooling! An 80mm fan blowing on your card helps out a ton, and so do copper mem sinks!

Forgot to answer your question, lol.

Basically, just up the core until you see a small amount of artifacts... You have to go very slowly. Like 1mhz increments. When you notice them, back the speed down by 5 mhz, then do the same thing for memory.

Play UT2k4 for a half hour, and go back to ATI tool and check for arti's again. No arti's? You're golden ;>

I got my core up to 520 from 425 default. Once I went over 525 I would get instability, no artifacts just instability.

PS I have the thermaltake giant 3 and a temp sensor built into the video card.

I'd agree with everything fear and sd said. I'd go a notch more and say get a zalman fanless heatsink (http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view.asp?idx=138&code=013) for your graphics card that get the addon fan for it. I have a 9800 running on the one down from what I listed and it oc's nicely. WITH a fan, since that has mem heatsinks and disipates heat from the front and back so well you could get some serious overclocking outa that card!

The Giant 3 is basically a Zalman with more fans. (Same heatsink that I have on my rig Dan)

Heh, i modded a 80mm fan to the side of my heatsink so it blows cool air onto my ramsinks. It's a beast to behold.

Are the artifacts that yellow shit that starts to appear on the image in the test? I had no money for extras so i just rigged my extra case fan to the card (well not exactly to the card it looks like this) I used an old metal slot cover and drilled some holes in it then bent it straight so I could just piggyback it on an unused slot screw so it's not actually touching any of the parts, btw my vid card does have a small fan on it as well  ???

Because google searching for Radeon 9000 overclocking isn't going to give any good results.

Also: Jinx will owe me man babiez.

Jinx: If possible, make the fan blow accross the card and out the back of the case, that way it cools the ram and GPU, and removes the heat.

Take out the extra slot covers so the air can leave too.

asking here first is superior for many reasons anyways. IE google it you may get to some complete wacko's website who's instructions will fubar you're computer asap.

Ask BLE first, google later I say. We're all friends, and helping each other out with things should be a pleasure. Chances are someone here has done something and had success with it and can help a fellow gamer. Building a community means helping out, not sending someone to google. I would trust any one of you here before ever just trying something I found on a website - unless one of you recommended that site. It's not being lazy - hardly, typing something in google isn't any harder than typing it on the forums here. It's about trust, and everyone here seems to trust each other, so stop calling them lazy and insulting them, but accept that trust and build on it.

 Show the love, share the love.

There...there's my 2 cents on the google goons - sorry for the thread hijack jinx. ;)

Overclocking a radeon 9000 isn't going to give that good of results anyway! LOL!
It's blowing across the card now just not in the direction you outlined I've already got it up to 290 pretty safely I couldn't find any artifacts at 304 using ati tool but I want to be safe, I do have several fans drawing air out shouldn't that be adequate?

All of our manbabiez will look like you only with bits of corn embedded in their skin...

That's a good image.. lol..

What is important is that the hot air of your card makes it's way *out* of the case. Thus the fan needs to point to the back! :)

Post a 3dMark2k1 score before and after! I want to see :)

#2 was 8988

and w/o oc'ing but using omega drivers it was 9830

I have yet to o.c. in combo with omegas you think I should try it?

What should I expect with the following (once I buy them?)

Athlon 64 3200+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
512mb pc3200 mushkin (might go up to 1gb Corsair XMS XL)
6800gt
160gb 7200 rpm hd

?

and another question (couldn't find on google...) will overclocking the 6800gt affect anything else because I do not have an agp or pci lock? And can I change the memory timings on my board?

Nope, AGP OC'ing does not affect the PCI and AGP busses. Modifying the bus speed will however.

That setup would get you around 18-20k.

You are overclocking your video card's core right? So... common sense would tell me that the core frequency has nothing to do with the AGP or PCI frequency.

Hmmm 18-20 doesn't seem that good considering that your system would cost a lot less and you got 17+.

Um, just to let you know, YOU DO NOT WANT ARTIFACTS. They are little corruptions on your card, and they are permanent. I would suggest finding a speed where you are happy with performance and see absolutely no aftifacts.

ok let me clarify. Artifacts create little sqaures on screen, and those little squares are not permanent. However it does damage your hardware, and those squares come back easier... also, they MIGHT be permanent... so in my opinion it's not a very shmart rishk to take. :)

got a BFG 6800GT OC today (370 mhz core/1ghz ram)

have it at the 6800Ultra OC speeds (420 core/1.1ghz ram)

if i go much over i get a massive glitch in Doom3 where it freezes, and then the lights go out. sources are there and visible, but no actual light...
