View Full Version : Unexpected BLE Mid LAN! *Saturday*
Ender

First off, sorry for the short notice, but there's still time!
That's right, BLE is having an unplanned Mid LAN Gathering! And better yet, this one is free! :woot: Seeing's how our last free event was so popular we thought we'd try another one. ;)
This time, our fearless M4LFUNCT10N has agreed to take us all to Batman's Lair! :woot: :erm: I mean - the legendary batcaves of Bellingham!
If you've always wanted to see this amazing place but never got around to it, now's your chance! Act now and save! This deal won't last forever! This is your blue light special right now at the BLE!
ehhe. :D
The plan is as follows:
Bring some snacks and water.
Meet at the Sehome Haggens parking lot between 9:30 and 10:00 to check out the hot haggen's employees...err...so we can follow M4L to the trailhead...yeah. And you can pick up any supplies if you were lazy or totally forgot to bring them .;)
So see you there! If you dare! And may you fare! Better than that Bear! Man these rhymes are bad! So true, and yet sad! :p
Rumor has it M4L is bringing his girl for us all to approve of and give them our blessing in the ritualistic BLE Blessing of the united couple as ONE cereMONEYplz. ;) It looks like I'll be packing my kids with us, and my wife will come as well. This is supposedly a good 5 hour hike round trip, but if we get a pretty good crowd it will likely take a little longer than that as these things seem to be that way when the numbers increase. Also since my kids are coming I'm likely to hold up the group some. ;)
We'll plan on eating said snacks at the caves, and hope for a sighting of that elusive BatBoy from the Weekly World News! :woot:

Not that I am agreeing to go. But you might want to tell everyone what day this is planed for.;)

LOL... yeah, Saturday morning, between 9:30-10:00AM. Look for my white Toyota. If anyone makes a big fuss and makes my girlfriend feel uncomfortable, you will suffer my wrath. And this isn't meant to be a taunt. This is the truth. Down in the caves there is a hole, I have no clue how deep because I've never brought a rope. This time I'm bringing one. My wrath includes you being tied up and lowered face first into the hole. Keep in mind I have no clue what kind of animals live down there....
That being said... It should be a blast. I don't remember how long the hike was last time(been about 8 years). I'm guessing it's close to 2 hours or something like that up. so probably an hour and a half back down, and I'm sure we'll play around up there for an hour. So I'm guessing 5 hours is a good guess, could end up longer if everyone is having lots of fun. Bring water. For those of you that never leave your computer, Mountain Dew is not a good drink for hikes. The caffiene and sugar dehydrates you. But hey, all of you go out and get exercise so you should know that right? Wait.. who am I kidding...
This will be girl friendly. If you have a girl you want to bring, bring her. Or maybe a girl you've been wanting to ask out....

It's a pretty good hike, all uphill. Don't go if you don't like excercise. Sounds insulting, but it's really not a very easy hike even though it isn't that long.
I should be there. I've been to the batcaves twice, and was hoping one or two people would want to split off and go to the top of Oyster Dome instead. :) But either is cool.

Have you ever been down inside that hole I'm talking about? I vagely remember it being a very tiny hole that was almost straight down... But I truely don't remember.

Hold up, if we're having a mid lan gathering that implies that there will be a lan during that month.
Ender, you're giving us a lan or you're going to be burned at the stake. Sorry duder :(

I don't know. Probably not. It was winter the last time I was there, and very wet, cold, and shitty, plus nobody remembered a flashlight. Caves of this type (spaces in between huge fallen boulders) don't tend to go deep or have big hidden underground caverns.... they just get filled with rubble. Maybe I'm just hard to please, but to me the caves themselves weren't really as cool as the hike and the view of the San Juans from parts of the trail.
Deeznuts, (har har) Oyster Dome is the highest point on that part of Chuckanut mountain. If you've ever been to the bat caves, it's the top of that huge fcuking cliff that the bat caves are at the base of. You split off from the trail to the bat caves about a quarter mile before you get there, and wrap around the side of the mountain to get to the top of it.

I think it's probably best to tell it like it happened rather than let rumors spread. People are going to find out, probably best that they know the truth to what happened. Plus Dave and I were talking and decided that it would look really bad if we kept it hush hush, then something happened in the future, then parents found out about this and wondered why they didn't know the track record.
Anyway, Dave will give a nice long writeup... But I'll give a basic rundown.
Started the hike around 10:15AM ish at the trailhead. Hike was long and slow, but somehow we did it pretty fast, because we were up there by 12:45. We went down into the caves. They were cold and wet. We ate lunch, then did some boulder jumping. I jumped off what looked like a cliff to a ledge that was 6 feet below. Thanatos followed me and it went horribly wrong. Lots of screams of pain followed. We'll have to wait and here what the damage was, but he wasn't getting out on his own. We waited for him to see if he would feel better in a bit... didn't happen. Called 911, and asked what we should do, they said they'd send someone up to assess the situation. Ender and his wife Sara took the kids and DZ back down the mountain while we waited. This was probably around 2:30PM. 2 EMT's came up with very little gear because they were told they had no authorization to move him. By the time they were given authorization it was about 5:00, and that would mean 2.5 hours down the mountain to get the litter(it's a metal gourney used for getting people out of sticky situations), then 2.5 hours back up. So they asked for backup. We got another guy about 30 minutes later, and we were told 2 more guys were coming, and Search And Rescue would be coming up too. So the 3rd guy and I went down the boulders trying to figure out the plan of attack to get Thanatos out. We did some hiking looked for the other 2 guys then came back. Then we went down the mountain(about 45 minutes hiking) trying to find those other 2 firefighters. Finally found them and headed back up and Search And Rescue had come in from somewhere else and already had him in a litter all strapped down. Probably 15 people from SAR, and then another 5 from Skagit volunteer fire station XXX(can't remember the number). So we slowly got him off the rocks and onto a horse they had brought. Then SAR group went back the way they came, and Pine, Disco Dave, Shannon, and I came back down a different trail with 4 EMT/volunteer firefighters down to a supply van. This trail was REALLY overgrown, and we were hiking in total darkness by flashlights and headlamps. The van shaved off about an hour of the hike and it took us down to my truck. We finally reached the truck at 10:15PM.
Thanatos was taken to a hospital down in Mt. Vernon if I understood correctly. So we'll just have to wait and hear how he's doing. The rest of us were pretty dehydrated because we didn't bring enough water for a 12 hour day hiking and sitting in the sun. All the people that hiked up ended up drinking all the water they brought too... so barely drank any water until around 8:00PM when the last 2 volunteer firefighters came with aprox. 7 bottles of water, which everyone shared. We're all completely exhausted and in some pretty good pain. I hiked more than I would have liked too.... but Thanatos is safe and getting the medical attention he needed. So everything is much better now.

I didn't mean for that last post to sound like I was hiding the truth. It was more of an inside joke to the people who were there today, because obviously much more happened than what I said. ;) I just thought it'd be funny to understate what happened in a very, very long day up on Chuckanut Mtn.

So far as I'm aware, we never figured out for sure what it was. I'm pretty sure it was improving as the day moved on...the Search and Rescue crew moved him MUCH easier than we ever did several hours earlier.
If he's not on his feet in a week, I'll be surprised.

A couple corrections if I may to the account.
When My family and DZ left the hill M4L's cell phone reported the time to be around 3:30 p.m. We were down at my car by 5:00. And was the ledge 6 feet? When Dave stood down there his head was above the spot where you jumped. Unless I wasn't informed as the correct place of the jumping and landing.
And how in the EFF did they get horses up there? :bulb:
We ran into all the volunteer guys on the way down and it appeared that none of the five knew where they were going. I did my best to give them directions, but seeings as it was my first time up there they may not have been very good. :(

They took a different route...I have no idea how that one compares to the one we took getting there.
I'd be pretty surprised if it was THAT better of a trail, though...it met up with the main trail we took about 1/4 mile from the rocks, give or take.
And the ledge was probably around 5 1/2 feet, maybe a bit more.
M4LFUNCT10N
07-18-2004, 03:36 PM
I'm 5'11", and the point where he jumped was I believe just above my head. The 5 you ran into on the way up was not the same 5. Two of the guys were called back down part way up the trail. 2 other guys were then dispatched later and they came up a different trail.
As far as Thanato's knee is concerned... he was still in some pretty bad pain. Only reason he was going better when SAR got there was because he was strapped into a basket and immobilized. A couple times someone hit his foot(it stuck out from the basket, looked like his knee was twisted), and when that happened he started complaining of pain again. But it must have been somewhat better for him to be able to ride out on horseback. I think Fear was going to get a hold of his parents to let us know how he's doing.

When I was hiking around with.... whatever that trucker's name was, the EMT that kept asking for smokes, we saw the sign below the rocks that warned of all sorts of stuff, and right there on the list was "Toxic Calcium Carbide". Figured I'd do a search and find what the symptoms are just in case. But we all should be fine. ;)
