You move out for the summer, live far far away doing some summer work, but wish to keep your room at your apartment.
Your roommates still want your share of the Power bill and the Cable bill, even though you won't be using these utilities...
Is it fair of them to ask for you to pay these bills?

+1 not fair.
This sounds like an extremely hypothetical situation, Stumanji. ;)

i can understand paying the cable bill, as that is a flat monthly luxury fee that you had already previously obligated urself to paying long before this summer job ever came into the picture. but then again, they could always turn that off untill you come back. :P
but as for power, they're out of their dicks end to make u pay for a un-fixed utility rate. (IE YOUR NOT USING ANY FRICK'n POWER. wtf, why would u pay for it?) hell, they could decide to put in a sauna while ur gone and run the electric bill though the roof, even though u don't get to use the sauna at all
not being able to use the sauna just isn't fair :P

If you want them to hold an empty room all sumer for you. you should pay your share of the rent and utilities. Its not fair to your roomates to not do that. I think you should pack up and move out completly, taking the risk that the room might get rented out before you get back, or pay what you always pay.
You still have a room so you still have the obligation to pay. What if one of your roomates spent 2 weeks with his girlfriend? would you cut him a break on the power and cable?
Thats the way I feel about it. But I have been in, and seen this situation before. When I was in the Navy, often people sharing an apartment would be on diferent ships. So sometimes they would be at sea at diferent times. But they still paid their share. Thats why people have roomates, to help lower the costs. If one person does not pay, someone has to pay more. And that just makes for unhappy roomates.

I assume from his post, that he will be paying rent.
the only questionable thing under consideration is the electrical bill along with the cable bill. Hes not going to be using electricity or watching T.V. while hes away.

yeah but they would have to pay extra to hold the room for him! I'm sure they could find another person to be there. If they speficily said "don't worry about it while your gone" then it would be different but here is a place you don't want to make yourself unpopular.

pay rent for room, nothing else, you wont be using the utilities, why should you pay for them? only thing you should have to pay is rent on the room.

Because you're charged a little for utilities even if NO ONE uses them. There's a flat rate, if I'm not mistaken.

The fact is when you got the room you agreed to pay your share of the rent plus 1/2, 1/3, etc of the utilities. I'm sure that was probly the agreement. It does not mater if there is a warm body in the room or not.
I'm making a list right now. Of people here I would never rent to.

I would have to agree with those who believe you should still pay, I can see either side of the argument, but in the end, if you agreed to pay these things in the first place, then you should continue to do so as per the agreement. Discuss it with your room mates more and see if they understand your opinion on the subject, I'm sure if they are reasonable enough, they would let you pay rent and power, but get away from the cable...ionno, seek a balance I guess.

Personal or Business?

It makes no diference to me, as long as he still has a room in the house. And what would you want if you were in their shoes? what if all your roomates took off for 3 months and you had to pay all the bills?

We've actually had this situation before, and we didn't ask the other roommate to pay his portions (it was ONE month though).
If they all took off, and it was just me... I'd take off too and cancel both utilities.

Not surprising.
I would continue to pay.
