I did a fresh install on my laptop and was going to install Adaware (its what i have always used) but I know that lots of people also use spybot. What do you guys use. and if you have tried both, what do you prefer

I use both. Spybot is good at doing a quick scan and getting the big, common spyware out of the way. Adaware however seems to scan even more because it detected 171 things that Spybot didnt see. But you have to be careful with adaware because ive heard it sometimes detects things that are important files on your computer that you need to keep.

Its true, adware will remove certain files that windows needs. Done it twice to me. I just stick to spybot now.

i suggest not downloading stupid programs the u really don't need and are most likely related to pr0n.
also, using an alternative browser to internet explorer is important.

Both is the best way to catch everything. However, with adaware you have to be careful not to delete important regs.

Not an option. I like IE. Sure some of the others have some things IE does not. But none are as widely supported. And I like reliability.

A lot of people still use IE, and I'm not completely against it or anything. But since I started using Opera I've been SO happy! I've never had an incompatability issue, and it always runs faster than IE. Plus you've got all the swanky features and customizability! :D

It's not bullshit, I personally have never had incompatability issues. I'm not saying they don't exist, I'm saying that I've never had the problems.

The only time I ever had a problem with Firefox was when FeaR had me d/l UO. Even then, when I got done using IE I did an adaware scan and it found two new things. Laff.

Why don't we pretend browsers are like religion? You can argue all day and you still will not make people change what they like.
This topic was about progams that detect spyware/ adware. lets keep it that way. I'm not going to switch browsers. it will not solve the problem of adware/spyware that comes in on free programs.

Yup, sorry Nick. Anyway, yeah I've used Adaware for a long time and haven't had any problems with spyware, except for one: after I started emailing Erin a lot and talking about her and stuff, I kept getting emails in my other account from "Erin" but it was all porn. It was really creepy. I would be like "Yay! Erin emailed me!" then I'd open it up and be like "EWGROSSITSGAYMANPRON!!!!" Do you think that was spyware?

Well of course they're going to hunt for flaws in the software that everyone uses. If everyone used Mozilla I'm sure they'd find a million security holes.

Exactly. That's the whole reason the guy switched (well, that's what you get from reading the article anyway...): Mozilla is a lot safter because a lot fewer people use it.
::EDIT:: On topic, I use Adaware and have never tried Spybot. I've never had a problem with Adaware, though.
