Interesting tidbit of info for some people is the G5 which apple just bumped the PowerMac line up to dual 2.5Ghz is now liquid cooled (http://www.apple.com/powermac/design.html). This is because there current setup with 8(??) low speed fans which are controlled by a microchip to create thermal zones and run independently to keep these zones cool, could not keep the cpus cool enough. Evidently they use this to keep it cool and quite still.
Interesting, too that the speed boost was 2.5Ghz from 2Ghz. Without real temperatures listed I'm wondering how much headroom this CPU has? Its roumerd the 29th of this month at the keynote in san fransico; Steve Jearbs will be announcing a dual 3Ghz G5 PowerMac as code from a recent update of OS X lists a non built computer.

Dan I fixed your link.

dude, you can't back up what you say! WHY are they evil, I'm all ears, yes they are different but just because something is different does not automaticly make it evil. PC's are not bad, they are different from macs. Each has its place.

Can I upgrade a mac without spending 4k on a new one? No.

Can a mac run any popular games? No.

Why are macs so good with digital video? Because software developers who are pro mac refuse to port their software.

Why are macs so overpriced? Because macs are getting their asses kicked by AMD and Intel.

yes, you can pop in new graphics cards, CPUs, memory, hard drives or you can just build your own if your that adiment about it.

yep, heres a list of a few of them (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71801/wo/GX3bqjWsXHJV3eDTc1WnFKKoEp3/1.3.0.5.16.1.1.0.1.3.1.1.0?61,32). You don't usually get as good FPS though.

Partly your correct, they do it because of OS X's Quartz Extreme desktop which is 3d powered which means better preformance which is important to them. @ Winhec 2004 MS showed this problem with XP vs Longhorn. Heres the transcript of what happend So now what I want to do is show you the importance of the "Longhorn" driver model. And if I can have the machines up, we've got an XP system I'm sorry, a "Longhorn" system that's going to use the standard XP driver model, and a "Longhorn" system that's going to use the "Longhorn" driver model. So what I'm going to do is bring up a few things here. It's working pretty good so far. A little bit jerky. Not enough video memory. Let's check it out on a "Longhorn" system.

So that's the fourth one. Still looking pretty good. Let me bring up something else. No problem. And while this was all going on, if I can bring it up here, which it doesn't want to come up -- well, even though I can't seem to bring it up, there is Quake running in the background, which is incredible. (Applause.)

I don't know why it's not coming up but Quake is running in the background -- ah, it's finally coming up. This machine is very slow for some reason. But as you can see, the driver model doesn't have any issue at all and that's no change in hardware, just change in the actual implementation. So that gives you an idea. Eventually I think that will come up. We'll maybe have to come back to it. I can't find the video but the longhorn one was increadibly laggy, horrible fps. Now if you look at an apple ibook g3 800mhz or so. Its able to run Quake with that many transparent windows on top with no problem.

Why are macs so overpriced? Because macs are getting their asses kicked by AMD and Intel.

negative, they are priced pretty decently. I'm looking at an iBook G4 for about $1,100. Its a teeny 12in with about 6hours batterylife, and does just about everything very well. Easier to upgrade the iBook's memory or whatever then any windows based notebook.

Now after saying all that Apple isn't perfect, but it has its place.

Other than memory, link me to places where I can buy these parts. I have never once seen a mac processor for sale, nor have I ever seen a mac videocard for sale outside of the system.

Processor speed? Ram? HD? The new apples are over 3k each!

If I'm running Quake I dont give a shit about transparent windows on top of it. Seriously, it can run a transparent window over a game... and this is something to brag about?

Give me some FPS readings on a game that I actually play and I might be swayed.

Quoteing Apple (http://www.apple.com/powermac/)
High-speed AGP 8X Pro Graphics Bus The Power Mac G5 comes with the ATI Radeon 9600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics card installed in a AGP 8X Pro slot for a maximum bandwidth of 2.1GB per second. And that’s a good thing, because the Power Mac G5 uses graphics cards not only to accelerate the latest video games, but the entire system as well. AGP 8X Pro gives Quartz Extreme the fullest power to display Mac OS X features as quickly as possible. So your graphics card does some heavy lifting so the G5 processor can do more number crunching at the same time.

if they can stick an nvidia card or an ati card in this slot it's should be upgradeable to the latest and greatest ones.

Apple now uses standard hardware for drives, memory, video cards, and expancion cards. all of these are upgradeable.

that being said... I have never heard of being able to buy apple processers seperate from the compleat system...

yeah its a bit of a trial but you can build them without much trouble. http://www.sonnettech.com/product/cpu_upgrades.html

because I'm usuing a dead slow lappy and have oodles of time on my hands I figure I'll allaberate more on this (insert Spellzing natzi jearn).

Basicly you buy a mobo for "replacement" then you get an upgrade card which rids the need of getting a CPU. Anyway a costum built one costs like $800 or something if memory serves me, just looks like a pc though.

So they finally jumped to some sort of PC style mobo spec?

(Bout fucking time)

they've had them for a long time. Actually they are very much like how pcs will be in a few years if intel has there ways, with the BTX spec. There mobos are mounted on the other side of the case then PC mobos, so I've been wondering if BTX cases will fit em nice? As for today you ahve a few options. Lian Li recently released a case with the mobo on the oppisite side. Actually its a copy of the G5 case in A LOT of regards. Its a bit spendy, the other option is your run of the mill pc case, you just have to do some modding to the back and punch wholes to mount your mobo in the tray. Not a big deal but a little work.

The other main issue is there PSU's are a lot different from PC's so you have to get one of theres which can be tough if you don't know where to look

maybe, but for now Macs is a decent OS, and it runs on under 1Ghz macs fine which longhorn will need pretty fly PC's. OS-X isn't better or worse, its different then windows.

Just you wait. You will get a coppy of longhorn and be like  "WOOT!!!!! This is soo much better than MAC!!!!!"
