I enjoy the visual styles quite a bit, not to mention it almost always runs beautifully. HOWEVER, I would prefer to have a computer that is good at everything, rather than one that was directing in specialty to one or two things. On my PC I can game, listen to music, create music, create movies, animate, work on graphics, etc. On a Mac you can do *some* of those things really well, such as graphics and movies and such, but others, like gaming (the obvious complaint) just isn't even half as good. So, I'm a PC guy overall!

I wont own a Mac. It costs more than a PC. It does not have as wide a selection of games and software. And I can't upgrade the hardware in it, so its lifespan is less than a PC.
Yes, they look nice and from what I have read, run quiet. But I prefer function over looks when it comes to computers.
Edit:
I understand that this topic was about Mac's OS. But due to the reasons above, I will most likely never have any experience with a Mac OS. ;)

bench marks on the mac are alot better, it runs on BSD (Unix), lots of the *nix peps are porting software to it, it has a nicer inside, it looks nicer, but it costs more and not as many people use it :buttwag:

If you want a really expensive video-editing and graphics design thing, and nothing else then buy a mac. If you want customizability, coolness, gaming, and the knowing that you are not a loser, GET A PC!!!!

You want to do something with your comp? Get a PC.
If you want it to sit there and look cool? Get a Mac, and be mocked for paying 3k for a white paperweight with lights.
Seriously, how can you claim that Macs are fast? Have you totally skipped over benchmarks comparing PC to Mac? It's rediculous. A while back MaxPC had a comparison of Mac to PC, and you know what, the editors and writers of MacAddict said it was a fair review. You know what else? The PC trounced the Mac by a factor of 5x. In other tests it was even worse.
Mac architecture has and allways will blow. It's OS will never catch on, and will blow. There will never be decent videocards for macs, and gaming will blow. Allways forever. x infinity +1

what I like about macs
Rendezvous - Each OS X capable machine when hooked up to wired/wireless network talk to each other, decide who gets what ip, ask each other who has available shared printers, music, folders etc... Also a few other features, basicly this means you need no DHCP router/server, no DNS server, and shares are easier.
QE - Quartz E basicly uses your graphic cards GPU for desktop rendering. This takes up more system memory but allows for animations to make none or nearly no impact on desktop preformance. As an example you can take a movie playing on the desktop and then stack say 25 semi transparent windows on top of it. Then do the dreaded window shake where you move the top one around as much as you can as fast as you can to try to kill it. Because your GPU is doing all the calculations your movie plays smooth as silk at a constant 24fps beneath all this (you can still see it too). Not usefull in that scenario really but it shows how powerfull it is, and you can amagine uses probably.
Intuitiveness - Stuff responds and is where I'd expect it to be. I'm not saying this is so with everyone, its just how I feel it is.
Looks - Many people don't like the aqua interface, but I really like the latest irritation in 10.3 os X. Its not as white, but more transparent so that its easier at night, it goes with most backgrounds, and just seems to add to the look your trying to get.
Animations - Again going back to QE, the animations for applications opening and such are smooth, not clunking as something is opening where you get a blank window. Its just smooth opening.
Exposé - Quickly have windows slide off the desktop, or have them all show. Make them go off the desktop grab a pic off the desktop that was burried then drag it to your email window to pop it in. All with just moving your mouse to a corner of the screen or a shortcut. You decide.
All in one place - A lot of times an application is going to be all in one place. I heard a story of a kid walking into a circut city with his iPod, hooking it up to an iBook and copying MS office off it by just dragging the folder onto his iPod. All it took was a few clicks, very convienant...well I mean not shoplifting that easily...just how easy it was to copy somethign like office.
Sleep - tell your iBook to sleep, and its screen goes blank and it goes into a sleep mode it can stay in for about 4 days or so. press the power button and it resumes where you were in about 4 seconds. Nice little touch :)
Packed OS - They include a ton of programs in there iLife pack that is free and allows you to do stuff like make music (use your apple as an amp), make movies etc... Fun stuff that comes standered. Lots of it too.
Well coded - since there hardware is so proprietary and since they make it they can make a stricter code on there os meaning its going to run a lot faster, and have fewer crashes.
The cons for it though imo are that it is so proprietary. You can upgrade the desktops, pop in a 9800 or more ram, or a new hd. But much more then that and your not going to be able to do it. I end up replacing my system completly from case to the cpu every 2 years. Doing so with a mac would be WAAY to expensive, also not as many games and the games it does have are generally not apple to pc playable mutliplayer.
My opinion is they make great notebooks for school, awesome dv rigs but will not take over the market place. Also MS will catch up a lot in Longhorn desktop wise.

Wow, great thorough review Dan. :rup:
I agree with pretty much everything you said too. Lord knows I wouldn't object to a Mac laptop for school, but if I were to choose one it wouldn't be Mac. I would like to be able to do school stuff, but also to game on it during breaks and stuff. But, if I one day do end up growing up, I'll prolly get a Mac notebook.

thanks, I deffinatly encourage everyone to just sit down at one of the macs at WCC's computer lab. Just mess with it a bit, the single button mouse is annoying as you have to use keyboard+mouse to do contextual stuff but os x fully supports dual button mice so its just the fact that the college doesnt have them that hampers them in that aspect.
