hey, any of you guys know about about cars? ya see, i'm thinking about getting a pair of 12" (or maybe one, depending on price) subs to into the back of my mom's 1989 Buick Electra just to thump it out (its a mother's day gift :D ). Don't really need anything fancy, just something cheap that'll get the job done.
there a good place to look in the puget sound area?

PM or email UB_Bomber (ubi bomber, ha ha), his cars always end up being a big subwoofer. Actually he takes the engines out and uses the electrical system that powers them to heat water which creates steam and powers his car :D
M4l I think knows a bit too. Hes turning out to be a bit to much like Mcguiver.
*note to self kill m4l so he does not cross you*
*note to self, use notepad next time so m4l doesn't read your note to kill him*

lol... McGuiver... I love that show! I learned how to make a bomb at 9 years old. Was gonna set it off too! But the parents realized my friends and I had been outside for too long and grabbed the matches before we could light it. :(

A base tube will do the average mom just fine. And some have an amp built in.

Ok, I got you now. Down in Skagit County, Car Stereo Plus is the best shop around. I don't know much about the Bellingham area.

you don't, by chance, know what a basic system goes for?

What type of music will your "mom" be mostly listening to? And how big of an amp will you be using?
Rap, dance and R&B music generaly work best with a bigger speakers and a bigger ported box. 12" or bigger
Rock and metal have faster base hits and soud best with smaller sealed boxes that use smaller speakers. otherwise the response time is to slow and the beats blend and distort. I prefer 10"
If you buy an amp, do some research and ask around. Just because someone makes a decent stereo doesn't mean they know how to build an amp worth a shit (ie. Sony). I prefer Rockford Fosegate amps.

No I don't. Its been a few years since I upgraded at all. They don't have prices but you can check out some of their work at their website. http://www.carstereoplus.com/.

mostly rock, but it'll be split with rock-blues, and a little dance. that's handy to know. guess it'll be some 10" instead.
as for amps, ugh.
i know @ cirruit city they have amp + 2 10s + case for $200. forget what brand it was... that worth it (used)? (if someone from here goes down and steals it i'll be p!ssed)
is there a place to get prices/reviews on the net?

probly not. But if the box is decent you can upgrade the speakers in it later down the road. It took me many years to figure out its not worth it to buy cheep parts for my gaming PC. because you will never be truely happy with it for long if you do. The same goes for Car stereo equipment. I spent $350 dollars on a Rockford Fosegate amp in 1992. I still use that amp today.
Crutchfield used to have decent prices and will send you a catelog I believe. http://www.crutchfield.com

Definately go with 10's. Those "package" deals aren't worth it. The bass is always subpar.

Never upgrade speakers and put them in an old box. Boxes are not "one size fit's all". Sub boxes need to be tuned specifically to a speaker. Never buy a cheap Qlogic box and throw a speaker/s in it. There is a lot to building a good box. You have to have the right volume, the port needs to be the right diameter and the right depth, there's even more to it than just that too.
As for RF, their quality has declined big time when the owner sold the company. Their products don't resemble their older stuff like what you have. From what I understand their newer stuff is mass produced and is prone to problems(older stuff was made in small batches built of high quality parts).

I would go with two tens. they have more of a punch and your "mom" will probley like the punch better and they wont punch a hole in you wallet either. A good amp for them I could get you one for like 70 bucks. also I wouldent go with cruchfeld. they are wayyyyyyy to over priced. if you wanna talk to me pm me and I can go out and get you the hook ups. by the way you should also cheak out my 2 new 10's. they are 1030 watts a pice. they rock. I have to keep putting my revirw mirrir back on. plus you cant see any of the wiers in my car either. I installed it all my self.

Eclipse, JL Audio, Focal, and Kicker. But don't go for the Kicker square subs. Anything other than round=bad. You get distortion when a speaker isn't round.

Find the specs on the speaker. There is a specific volume needed for each speaker. Find a sealed box that has that volume in each chamber and you're golden.

monoblock amps are the best(one channel). Anything else isn't made specifically for subs. You only need a single channel for subs, even multiples. Find a good monoblock amplifier that is stable down to 1.5 ohms and you are set.
BTW... You're gonna need some serious wattage for those two. you'd be better off buying two JL W0's. They aren't much to look at, but they hit hard, they are cheap, and very efficient(run at 125watts RMS). W0's will hit harder than you would need(for the music you listen to).

2 ohms good enough?
M4LFUNCT10N

Depends on the amplifier. Those subs you selected are 4 ohm dual voice coils. The ideal way to run subs is: Voice coils in parallel, subs in parallel. Running them in parallel drops the resistance(ohms) in half each time. So (2) 4 ohm voice coils will be dropped down to 2 ohms. Now run (2) subwoofers together in parallel and you are down to 1 ohm. That's pretty dang low. The other way you can do it.... Run the voice coils in series, so now instead of 4 ohms, you are up to 8 ohms each sub. Now run the subs in parallel, you're back down to 4 ohms again. Definately not optimal to run the coils in series.. but it's doable. So now, let's say you take a 600 watt monoblock subwoofer amp. Running the subs in parallel, you are splitting the power between the two. So each sub receives a clean 300 watts. now, instead of giving each voice coil 150 watts(this would happen if they were in a parallel configuration), you are giving coil 300 watts, but the power is not as clean because it is in series(the power goes through one coil, then goes into the next).
M4LFUNCT10N

Now, if you understand all that.... let's get on to the next part. Those subs you've selected are 600watts RMS. So you need a 1200watt RMS amplifier. And remember this.... subwoofers aren't blown because they are overpowered, they are blown when they are underpowered/given unclean power. Always best to overshoot the power not under. And ALWAYS look at the RMS wattage. That is the "Root Mean Square". Which basically means, it's the value of the wattage that is continuous. All other values are peak, which is what the subwoofer or amp can hit for an instant. These values are very misleading.

THIS is what I suggest you go with...

My friend that sold my the 2 JL 10w6's switched to 2 10w0's. His bass sounded cleaner and deeper when he switched to the lower line. Why? Because he wasn't running enough power to the beefier speakers. The lower line is built to be very efficient. They will take very little power and create some big sound. It's like taking a tuned up GSR(acura motor) and sticking it in a heavy older muscle car. It just isn't smart. Put a big engine in a big car, put a small engine in a small car. Same goes with amplifiers and subwoofers.
