I have a MSI KT4V motherboard with no computer to put it in at the moment. I was debating what to do with it and I thought of maybe creating an online game server with it.

I plan to put an AMD 2500+ on the board along with 1Gb pc 2700. And an 80 GB hard drive with 8 MB buffer. Also a 430W power supply. I have a video card that will work, and everything else is built into the board. No other programs will be ran from the PC besides the game software and OS.

My first choice was a Battlefield 1942 server. After doing some research online it looks like my dsl upload speeds are not the greatest for a server that can hold more than a few players.

My second choice would be UT 2003. I have not seen anything on bandwidth requirements for it though.

Also anyone have experience using Linux for a game server? I have some experience loading and using Linux but I am still not comfortable getting around and loading programs with it yet. I would prefer to use XP Pro. But would use Linux if the benefits are worth it.

Anyone with experience running anything like this have any suggestions?

Our flagship server at the party pretty much runs the same thing as that, 'cept with a beefy vid card (cause Dave upgraded so we put his old beefy card into the server) and a smaller HD. We use winxp Pro cause neither of us use Linux at all. We haven't had any probs with it either, though they're always right there and we can get into the full system, not just a web based admin proggy. So if you're keeping it in your house, you may want to use an OS you're familiar with.
However, I have had admin access to Linux servers online, and they have always seemed to run a lot smoother. The windows based servers I've had experience with have always caused problems. Nothing major, but stuff like maps not switching and settings not saving and that sort of thing.
As far as 2k3, what kind of dsl do you have? As far as I know I'm not sure you'd need as much upload as you would for bf1942. But I'm also not certain on that.

Hope that helps!

Cool, thanks for the answer.

dsl Reports says my upload speed is about 110. Guess I will try it and see how it does with UT 2003. I think I will use XP. I found a tutorial on how to make it run as a service and it also listed what services it was safe to shut down if it was only being used with UT.

XP's a pretty solid operating system, and I don't think linux really has a leg up on Microsoft. The biggest advantage to linux at this point in the game, I think, is linux is a great way to avoid all the computer viruses..er..virii...or...whatever.

And while Battlefield is a bandwidth whore, I bet your upload speeds would be just fine for a reasonable sized ut2k3 server.
